Chapter 7

Katrina stood in nearly complete darkness. A soft glow shown through a circular window before her, the panes set in an almost spider-web pattern. There was no chill that she could find yet her skin stood up in goose bumps and a continuous shiver worked its way up and down her spine. She moved forwards, towards the window, though every part of her being wanted to turn and run from it.

“Katrina,” a voice whispered from the darkness.

She continued forward without understand why. Through the window she could now see red and green bolts of glowing energy followed by orange explosions. It all appeared very distant and unreal.

“Katrina,” the voice whispered again, sounding closer than before.

A dark figure emerged from the blackness to the side of the window. It was far taller than she and seemed to tower before her, draped in dark robes that made it appear even larger than it surely was in truth.

“Katrina,” the voice whispered again, this time obviously coming from the figure before her, as a pale crooked finger emerged from beneath the heavy cloth and pointed at the girl.

Without meaning to she felt herself drop to the floor, kneeling before the faceless figure. Her eyes looked down into the darkness but somehow she knew that there was movement above and in front of her. She tried to brace herself, bunching her muscles and setting her feet apart but the blow came too quickly and too hard.

Katrina slid across the floor, her shoulder throbbing from coming down hard. She stayed laying as she was but raised her head to look back at the figure. Two hands full of ten crooked pale fingers were visible and pointed in her direction. Katrina’s stomach dropped out as fear enveloped her.

“No!” She screamed but the word disappeared in the crackling of electricity as bright blue lightning bolts jumped and danced from the fingertips and flew into Katrina’s body. She had suffered such punishment many times before but that was little comfort.

After what felt like an eternity the pain stopped and her fear began to ease. She lay panting for several long minutes before looking back at the figure. Darkness surrounded him still. The pale hands hung loosely at his sides and the concealing hood had been thrown back. A skull draped in loose flesh and housing two glowing yellow eyes looked down on Katrina, grinning.

Katrina awoke with a scream.
