Chapter 53

Katrina dived face first off the hanging walkway just as a glowing red blade began to singe her sleeve. She tucked her head down and shoulders around as she hit the stone floor below in a row. Her opponent followed.

As she stood, her palm opened and her hand stretched to meet the lightdagger flying at her. It connected with a slap and ignited instantly, adding a fine blue light to the darkened training room.

Her blades crossed just in time to catch the red lightsaber before it could cut and burn her face. Xenritha nodded his approval. “Your movements are far more fluid than they once were. You’re trusting yourself to the Force more, also.”

Katrina moved her blades to more tightly catch and hold his weapon. She kicked out with one leg, connecting with his side. Both fell to the floor, Xenritha’s hilt dark and rolling away. Katrina let her long yellow saber extinguish and tossed it to the side, keeping the dagger close. “You’re limping still. Why have you not healed yourself completely? The last hunter has been dead for weeks, you have had plenty of time.”

“It is not so bad.”

“Bad enough that you have to limp from the pain. Bad enough that you cannot ignore it, as I’ve seen you do hundreds of times before.”

“You exaggerate.”

Katrina looked at him sternly. She let the last blade slip back into its home and called the others to her hand. She carried them to the wall and replaced them on their hangers, sighing deeply as she let go.

“You’re showing your age, Xenritha,” she observed far more lightly than she felt as she moved to help him up.

“I fear you are right.”

“Come quickly,” Cha-Lee called from the doorway. “Neither of you will believe it! He’s been found! The ninth! The last! The final Zanespot has been found!”

“Finally,” Xenritha breathed.

“How long then?” Katrina asked. “How long until Guardian can be released?”

“Months! Maybe years, but we must be optimistic!”
