Sewing Basics
Some Essentials for Sewing
- A Sewing Machine you can Grow With! Buy a Good Name Brand to avoid frustrations. Husqvarna, Bernina, Pfaff and Elna are my choices!
- Pin Cushion or Magnetic Pin Catcher & Pins (sharps, crewels, straight, & ballpoint pins)
- Measuring Tools-(tape measure, ruler, seam guage, and yard stick) You can consider a T-square or a see through ruler.
- Cutting Tools-(seam ripper, rotary cutter, pinking shears, and a good pair of dressmaker's shears. Going cheap on these could cause crying in the future. Maybe not that drastic, but close!)
- Marking Tools-(tracing wheel and paper, marking pencils, tailor's chalk)
- Pressing Tools-(A steam iron with major steam. It is amazing what steam can do. Also, a tailor's ham, sleeve board, and press cloth are helpful)
- Fray Check- a liquid ravel preventer.
- Basting Tape
- Weights- used for holding pattern to fabric.
- Loop Turner
- Bodkin-to thread things like ribbon or elastic through casings. Very helpful!
- And last of all, a point turner can help make points and turns come completely out.

Stretch and Sew Patterns
This is an example of basic sewing. My daughter is wearing a coat dress which buttons down the front. This is a fairly easy pattern with lots of buttonhole practice. You can do this too! ! !
