BRAD: Movies That Could've Been
DAVID (1996)
This was thought to
be Brad's fifth movie but it fizzled, supposedly because they
didn't have enough money to pay Brad. The film was supposed to be
a coming-of-age pic set in Louisiana.
THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK (1997)
This film for the
longest time was listed in The Internet Movie Database and The
Hollywood Stock Exchange. The movie was supposed to have been
directed by Milos Forman (One Flew Over The
Cuckoo's Nest) and was to have co-starred
Liv Tyler (Armageddon),
Natalie Portman (The Phantom Menace),
and Thora Birch (Alaska).
Brad cleared up this rumor in October of last year when he told Time
Out New York magazine,"" For more
information on this movie, click here.
SAVAGE (1997)
Seventeen's
July '97 Brad cover issue stated this as an action/adventure film
Brad was considering doing. The film, which was to be with
Nicolas Cage, hasn't been made at all to date.
FALLEN ANGEL (1997)
The Brad Renfro Website was the first to list this project; it
was intended to be directed and written by Brad. In the October
'97 publication Teen Celebs
the article on Brad mentioned it, but that could easily have been
information taken directly from Calvin's website. Anyway, it was
supposed to be done by Brad and his friend Kevan Michaels, and
apparently, there is already a script written by Brad, but they
are having trouble finding a company to work on it. Well, for now
at least, this project is a dud, although this is definitely the
most likely of any of these to one day be released with Brad. I
have heard two variations on the plot line: one discusses a girl
who dies young but is still around as an angel...a fallen angel,
which is supposed to be similar to something that happened in
Brad's life (a girlfriend dying, but not the angel part).
However, I don't think that is true at all. The second storyline
has Brad playing a young guy on his own who is talking to people
all day long about how he is a fallen angel and he is telling
stories to everyone, but it turns out he is just a crazy person
making stuff up.
RACE MATTERS (1998)
There was one Internet site that listed this film as a future
Brad project a while back. Only the title was given to this film,
which it appears is not happening.
AMERICAN HISTORY X (1998)
In Time
Out New York, Brad states that this was the
only other movie that had a role that looked appealing at the
time he signed on to do Apt Pupil. In this
Nazi drama, Edward Furlong wound up playing the character Brad
would have, as a young emerging Skinhead. Edward Norton would win
an Oscar nomination for Best Lead Actor, playing Furlong's older
brother.
THE FACULTY (1998)
Brad was offered the role that Elijah Wood would go on to play in
this Kevin Williamson-directed sci-fi thriller. Brad didn't
choose to do this film because he figured it would be just
another teen horror film.
NEVER BEEN KISSED (1999)
Apparently, Drew Barrymore, who produced this film in addition to
starring in it, had hoped Brad would be in this film. Obviously,
Brad wasn't in it when it was released earlier this year. The
story about a young woman who goes to back to high school to feel
what it is like to not be a nerd like she used to be considered
when she was in high school. In addition to Barrymore, the film
starred David Arquette (Scream),
Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live),
and Leelee Sobieski (Deep Impact).
THE DEEP END OF THE OCEAN (1999)
In the same issue of Seventeen,
Brad was mentioned to possibly be playing the role of Michelle
Pfeiffer's son in this drama. Brad eventually turned it down and
Jonathan Jackson took the part.
DETROIT ROCK CITY (1999)
In another role that would go to Edward Furlong, Brad had been
considered for this film, playing one of four teenagers on a
mission to see KISS in
concert in the '70s.
UNDER THE MIMOSA (1999)
Yes it appears that UTM
is the latest failed Renfro project. This was supposed to be a
drama set in the 1960's South, co-starring Leanne Rimes and
Elizabeth Perkins. Brad was supposed to play Ricky, a teenager
who has to go to Vietnam. This film was supposed to be directed
by Tamra Davis (Billy Madison,
Half Baked).
Apparently, the film had budget problems and country singer Rimes
backed out of it.
TART (1999)
This film, rumored to star Brad and Melanie Griffith, may very
well be no movie at all.
SKIPPED PARTS (1999)
Who knows if there's any validity to this rumored project
starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, with a mentioned cameo by Drew
Barrymore? We'll see...
