Anniversary Poem

A poem written for the 50th anniversary:

When We First Met

It was only the simple things we had.
Before TV of dial telephones.
Before the day of am-track trains.
Before the day of jet airplanes.

I was in the Navy during those days.
It was V-Mail letters I wrote to her
Although they were censored.
Still Our love crept through.

The war raged on for quite some time.
For each other it was made easier.
for us to endure
Because of the mail man ,so dear.

Now when it was ended
and i was set free
We went for a drive
I ask her to marry me.

She said she would
and I ask her when
Without even a word
I would have , right then.

That has been fifty years
and it sure went fast
Day by day year by year
That YES, sure did last

We have laughed together
Cried together too
But our love was sufficient
To see things through.

We have had differences
Quarreled some too
But our love was sufficient,
to see things through.

Our Vows we repeated
Each and every day
Not just by words or what we say
It was in deeds In work, in play

Our second fifty will begin soon
But if by chance we don't finish it here
Then we are willing to
continue elsewhere
