Hobo

I remember! One Sunday morning, Robert Lackhart, Edgar Lockhart and myself had planned a trip. We was going to Florida. We was about 16 yeas old, We didn't know how far it was but it seemed an attractive place to spend the rest of our life. So we didn't show up for Sunday services and instead walked to south Corbin and waited for a freight train to head south. It came down the track about high noon and we all latched on. It was a fast freight and went through Williamsburg like a streak. We was in Saxton Ky. in no time. But our trip ended abruptly when some of the train men saw us and stopped the train, I am not sure if they stopped just because they saw us or if they was stopping any way, but they accomplished the job. In other words they put us off. Now we washed up a little in a creek and went to the highway, We couldnt get a ride, anyway who would want to pick up three hobo's? We walked all the way back to Williamsburg, by that tine it was dark, We pooled the money we had, I think one of the other fellows had most all of it. I know I didn't have money in those days. We got a Cab to take us to Corbin. I don't remember eating anything. so I guess we was pretty empty by that time. We started walking from Corbin home but some of the Lockhart boys came along in a car and gave us a ride. They had been looking for us all day and was pretty bad disturbed. I got home and Mom & Dad was not there, they had been looking for us. I pretended to be asleep when they came in. Mom said we should drag him out of that bed and give him a good whipping! Dad said no I am too glad to just see him. So I got by. Someone ask us how we was going to live down in Florida, well that was simple, we was going to pick Banana's and eat them.
