VISITORS TO TAIWAN, THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA (ROC), ARE REQUIRED TO HOLD VALID VISAS TO ENTER THE ROC, EXCEPT FOR THOSE WHO MAY ENTER UNDER THE VISA-EXEMPTION PROGRAM.
Visitor visas may be granted to foreign nationals who intend to stay in ROC for less than six months for the short-term visiting purpose.
Requirements:

3) a passport valid for not less than six months, and
4) documents verifying the purpose of visit
Resident visas may be granted to foreign nationals who intend to stay in the ROC for more than six months for the purpose of long-term stay.

4) supporting documents or official letters of approval from a competent authority of the ROC.
A resident visa holder is required to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate at the local city/county police headquarters following his/her arrival in the ROC.
The nationals of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, the Netherlands (Holland), Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA may apply for a landing visa upon their arrival; a landing visa is not to exceed 30 days and no extension is permitted.

The nationals of Australia Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, the Netherlands (Holland), Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA may enter the ROC under the visa-exemption program. They are eligible to stay up to 14 days, but no extension is permitted.

Foreigners who enter the ROC with a resident visa are required to apply for an alien resident certificate.
Requirements:

2) passport,
3) 4 photos (1" X 1/2")
4) resident purpose document or certificate, and
5) fee: NT$ 1,000 for 1 yr. NT$2,400 for 3 yrs.
Alien residents need to apply for a six-month multiple exit permit if they want to go out of the ROC.

Foreigners who enter the ROC with a sixty-day visitor visa may require an extension on sufficient grounds.
