A fearsome beast, the meat-eater stands about five meters tall, walks on two legs and has some of the characteristics of a reptile. A rancor has disproportionately long arms, huge fangs and long, sharp claws. One rancor, a gift to crime lord Jabba the Hutt on his birthday, is kept as a pet in a special pit in Jabba's desert palace on Tatooine. The rancor is both a source of entertainment and a way to get rid of employees, musicians, and others who have failed him. The pit is under Jabba's court, providing an excellent view as victims struggle to fend off the huge beast. But Luke Skywalker, who doesn't want to be the beast's next meal, has other ideas.
