Hand-finished in gleaming chromium, Queen Amidala's Royal Naboo Starship is distinguished by its elegant curves and clean lines, which reveal the Naboo's deeply artistic cultural roots. Designed and built on Naboo using the finest imported components, the ship is a marvel of technology-complete with the revered Nubian 327 sublight drive system and an elaborate array of advanced monitoring equipment, which can anticipate mechanical problems before they occur. In keeping with the way of the Naboo, the ship is completely unarmed. The mirrored chromium finish that gleams over the entire surface is purely decorative, and was flawlessly hand-produced by the traditional craftspeople of Naboo. Only the Queen's own vessel may be finished with this chromium treatment. Inside this extraordinary vessel, Queen Amidala and her sovereign entourage travel in matchless style, surrounded by refined elegance that is a royal prerogative. The Royal Throne Room, located in the aft of the starship, gives forum to visiting dignitaries and effectively extends boundaries of Theed Palace to Naboo's airspace and beyond. When the craft suffered damage during its escape from the Trade Federation blockade, a squadron of astromech droids (among them R2-D2) whirred into action to execute repairs on the ship's crippled shield generator. When George Lucas asked Design Director Doug Chiang to produce a sleek chrome ship for Queen Amidala, Chiang originally generated a 1950's-inspired conceptualization that owed its influence to the automobile hood ornaments of that era. Numerous configurations followed, and the final regal design emerged.
