I stood on the outskirts of Heaven one day,
and watched an angel kneel to pray.
She knew not that i was there,
and did not know I heard her prayer.
She arose and reached into the heavens blue.
She took a tiny cloud, and some stars, too.
She took a little of the gold from a rainbow,
and the music from a heavenly harp, just so.
She took a little of Mary's eternal love,
and several roses from the gardens above.
The corner of a jolly cherub's smile,
and a dimple from a little child.
She took the laughter from a tiny brook,
and the imagination from a childhood book.
She took some faith of the heavenly Son,
and when all this was done;
She fashioned before my eyes for me,
a sight almost to beautiful to see.
A thing of love some heart to thrill.
A tiny object that some life would fill.
As I watched the angel there,
she knelt again and her prayer
went out to our Lord in trust.
I leaned nearer, to hear it thus:
"Our Father, this job I have done,
with hair of gold, and dimples, but one.
I made his eyes of heavens blue.
His image I fashioned after you.
I made his laughter quick and free.
I made him beautiful for all to see.
I made him soft and warm to hold.
I made him humble and a little bold.
All these things are but a part,
because I truly filled his heart,
with love and laughter and extra joy.
With my hands, and heart, i fashioned
this boy!
For some earthly Mother, but I
shall watch over him from the sky.
I shall keep him safe at his play,
and care for him through all the day.
The nights too will be mine for keeps.
I'll guard his soul while he sleeps."
The she arose and took his hand.
My eyes suddenly were filled with sand!
I could not see the way
she went that glorious day.
The heavens became as the night,
and when I opened my eyes again to light,
I turned my head and near me lay
the angel's child, I had seen that day.
I bowed my head in humble prayer,
as I beheld his beauty there,
and thanked my God and she,
for giving this, MY SON, to me.
