Kenvir, Ky. is located in Harlan County on a section of Black Mountain approximately four miles from Evarts, KY. The name Kenvir was derived in a strange manner. It seems that Kentucky said the land in this paticular area belonged within the states boundries and Virginia said it was rightfully theirs. In the end, Kentucky ended up with the land. Because of the dispute, they used the first three letters of Kentucky (Ken) and the first three letters in Virginia (Vir) to make up the name Kenvir. The most important thing to ever happen in Black Mountain area was the opening of the coal mines and that took place in the early 1900's.
