Last year I did a show on Ilayaraja for Deepavali. IT was so great a hit that the ASTRO Private TV Station is repeating on 9 NOvember at 4.00 pm Malaysian time. This is called RAJANNA RAJATHAAN- covering 25 years of Raja's music contribution. From Annakkili to Azhagi. A great hit. If you can, pls do catch it. You can post your comments on the show here, and I'll respond to them.
Thanks.

Dear Mani Sir,
I remember your mentioning this on IR's bday thread last year and requested my malaysian friends to watch it. Will it be possible for you to upload the program somewhere so that non-Malaysian fans can also watch the same?

I have recorded it on Video Cassette. I do not have the technical expertise. If someone could do it, then it would be possible. But that would be copyright infringement.Therfore I would have to send a hard copy if you need it.
Where are you? I may post to you a copy of the cassette.
Thanks

Dear Manisekaran,
For people like me in the US, who have no access to Malaysian TV or in fact any Asian TV, is it possible for you to provide this program through Internet media?
Thanking You in Advance.

Will posting the script alone in TFM-DF be a big issue (i.e. rights stuff)? That might make a great reading....

I had selected 25 best songs of Ilayaraja. His bests actually run into at least one hundred, I would say. But these 25 are stand alone songs- milestones in his career. Following recording for 3 hour program, 4 songs were finally omitted- owing to time constraints.
The four songs are:
1. En Kanmani Ilamangani- Shittukkuruvi-counterpoint story
2.Katril Enthan Geetham- Johnny- mesmerised the musicians
3.Engiruntho Azhaikkum un Geetham- Hindi singers yearning to sing under Raja.
4. Oru Jeevan Azhaithathu- Geetanjali- a versatile singer
The rest could be seen over the TV show.
In this thread let us all discuss what we consider are Raja's landmark songs -and giving reasons.

"Raja's landmark songs "
- are these landmark's to be based on specific criteria (i.e. musical) or anything that caused a sensation?
(for e.g. 'iLamai idhO idhO' had a version without vocals on the LP record -probably the first ever in TFM- which was even played on public transportation like buses or had the distinction of being the record number of `fillers' in the end of cassette recording by recording shops:-) This was obviously a landmark song for reasons not purely musical...)

Similarly, `nAnAga nAnillai thAyE' probably was the beginning of having the `track singing number' also on the disk / cassette (i.e. the IR version while the SPB version was the only one for the movie). Since a lot of similar numbers followed in the coming years, can this be called a landmark number, being a pioneer in that trend?:-))

En Kanmani is Raja's first attempt in bringing out Counterpoint technique in its fullnesss, using stereo effect.
We shall start out discusssion, using his films, using Annakkili as a start. So can we go in stages please? I shall indicate the films and all of us can discuss. I fell there must be an order for us to cover maximum.

"Chinna kannan azhaikiraan" dispelled the myth that Raja was fit for only dappanguthus and folk songs. Especially making the carnatic music exponent BalamuraliKrishna to sing the song added authenticity. The song made even the purists or carnatic music rasikas to sit up and take notice of Raja due to the novel adaptation of a strictly carnatic music oriented raga "Reethigowlai" to suit film music.

Dear ManisEkaran,
We all would be happy to see your list of your 'landmark' songs of IR. I think you will most probably reflect the learned indian audience much better than the young or the initiated who often read this forum.
Looking forward to your writeup.

ANNAKKILI UNNAI THEDUTHE
This song shall always mention the name of Ilayaraja. This song drew the attention of Tamils all over the world towards Pannaipuram, an unheard of village among the 15,000 famous villages at that point of time.
From 1967 to 1975 Ilayaraja was in Madras, endeavouring to enter the cine field as musician. By 1971, Ilayaraja was running a musical band by the name of PAVALAR BROTHERS. Ilayaraja had been assisting G.K. Vengkatesh and a few other MDs, mainly as guitarist. Raja was also playing in musical bands, and drama troupes of Sangili Murugan and Bharathiraja (original name of Chinnasamy, a Malaria Inspector) who moved from Madurai District to Madras in search of cinema chances). Ilayaraja also played in a band run by SP Balasubramaniam. So Ilayaraja’s name was already becoming popular in Madras.
In about 1971, Ilayaraja was booked for composing music for a Tamil film called Deepam (not that of K. Balaji) This was to be a movie supposed to be scripted by writer P. S. Ramaiyah, directed by Dada Mirasi, and starred by Gemini Ganesan, Pathmini, Jayshankar and Cho. However this chance did not materialise. But Ilayaraja had already composed a song called “Sivanai Naadu” sung by TMS for that film. Both the song and the film did not materialise. Then another chance came for a film called UYIR. SP Balasubramaniam, Ilayaraja and close associates booked a sound studio and recorded 4 songs, along with re-recording. As they were late, the producer had selected other MD for the film. The third chance was more promising as Ilayaraja and SP Bala had already participated in a pooja for a film in which Ilayaraja was booked as and MD. This too faded off.
Finally, a chance came through Panju Arunasalam, who was of the opinion that the quality of Tamil film music was already facing a downhill trend. Panju wanted new talents and new face in the music world. He had heard of Ilayaraja, and wanted to meet him at Palmgrove Hotel in Nungambakkam area. Ilayaraja went empty handed- with no musical instrument with him. Panju’s first impression on Ilayaraja was quite negative. In a subtle attempt to avoid him, Panju requested Raja to return the following day and compose some of his songs that were readily available. Raja, who did not want to miss this golden opportunity volunteered to sing the songs that he had composed. So Raja drummed on the nearby table and sang all the songs that are in Annakkili. Panju was truly and wholly impressed, and there and then decided to use him for Annakili. Panju asked for the name of Ilayaraja, who was born Gnana Desigan, and became David Rasaiya following the conversion of his family to Christianity. Raja introduced himself as Rasaiya. As there was already an elderly AM Raja, Panju named him a younger Raja- Ilayaraja. So came the long awaited chance and a new name.
Bu that was no the end of the tests and tribulations that Raja had to face before succeeding in his first movie. Panju’s producer brother K.N. Subbu who owned the SPT films was not too impressed with Ilayaraja. But Ilayaraja had already composed all the songs for Annakkili. Subbu demanded listening to all the songs in full before a final clearance could be given. This was the last stride. Raja had to either make it or break it. On the following day, he rounded up about 60 musicians and brought them to Balaji Marriage Hall where he played all the songs that he had composed. It was only then that Subbu was convinced.
Again, he ordeal had not ended. On the recording day, the orchestra, S. Janaki and the key players in the production of music for the film had turned up. When everything was set, and when the recording was about to begin, there was a power cut! Raja and other s were very depressed. When power supply resumed, the song was taken about 10 times for ensuring perfection. Finally the tenth attempt was given OK. Other songs were also recorded.
When the film was released, the first ten days were most depressing as the crowd was not there at the theatres. But in stages, as the ALL India Radio started to broadcast the songs, crowd started to swell. That was a time when there was a trend to produce colour movies. In this movie, one could not boast of charismatic stars. Sivakumar and Sujatha were there. Finally, this movie became the only Silver Jubilee hit for 1976- no movie of MGR and Sivaji Ganesan could be compared with Annakkili.
The Silver Jubilee celebrations were arranged in an open field at Madurai. Unfortunately there was a heavy downpour, and so there was no big crowd. Yet some die-hard fans for Ilayaraja were already created by this first movie. As the rain subsided, one such fan went to the micrphone and yelled in utter desperation to see Ilayaraja. He shouted, “Where is Ilayaraja, the MD for AnnakkilI?”
It is only usual for audience to turn up to see the actors and actresses for any victory celebrations. But Annakkili was the first movie, it is reported, where the fans had turned up to welcome the MD and not the stars. This is said to be the first movie where the status and value of Music Director had scaled higher than that of the stars.
It is said that the original singer booked for the film was LR. Eswary. However, at the last moment S. Janaki was booked for reasons that are yet to be made public. Janaki started to reign supreme. Panju had introduced a new genius who was to change the trend and set new standards in the filed of cine music. Annakkili Unnai Theduthe was the beginning of many pleasant beginnings. That song shall ever be synonymous of Ilayaraja.
Now, over to Raja's fans for further discussions.

Dear K,
When the ASTRO was for discussions, we identified about 50 over landmark songs. But they could not be contained in a 3 hour program. So we had to accomodate with only 25 songs- reflecting 25 years of Raja's contribution. Finally four songs had to be cut off to give way for commercials as well.
So you would appreciate that oury hands were tied.
In this thread, I am going to list, what I think are landmark songs with my own reasons. As usual readers could agree, disagree, or throw in more light.
Should we go in stages, we could be ensured of healthy and interesting discussion. I am going to reveal interesting titbits that I gained from Ilayaraja himself and his close assiociates.
There are already many, nay, numerous threads on IR- some contain unhealthy vibrations and spirit. I have dedicated this to his fans, not bashers.
With sincere souls like you around, let us see what best could come out of this thread.
