Results of a scientific study featured in the August 2005 issue of Neurobiology of Aging that the phyto-chemicals in the blueberry fruit, when taken as a dietary supplement, could reverse age-related changes in temporal processing speed in the primary auditory cortex. That's a pretty impressive find for the holistic wellbeing crowd as well as those in western medicine.

The Tufts scientists who conducted the study found that the anti-oxidants in blueberries can reverse age-related declines in neuronal signal transduction as well as cognitive and motor deficits (m"mory, learning ability and balance). Their investigation speculated that blueberry supplementation may also help slow declines in brain function that accompany diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease.

Why are antioxidants important for good health?
Antioxidants are responsible in part for keeping us healthy and young. There have been hundreds of studies over the years that have proven that statement. Anti-oxidants help fight fight free radicals damage and blueberries appear to fight them exceedingly well.

How many blueberries must be consumed to gain their superior antioxidant and antiaging health benefits? From all these studies, the ideal intake to achieve these benefits is about one half cup of blueberries per day. The prescription you should be taking appears to be one that most doctors never seem to prescribe, the holistic wellbeing approach: take natural health remedies, learn how to heal naturally with organic foods, up your intake of antiaging nutrition foods such as blueberries, and exercise at least three times a week.

Brisk walking for 15 minutes is great but the addition of weight training and aerobic exercise will help even more to increase your physical strength and mental clarity.

In addition, physicians could be telling their patients to be sure they are drinking enough healing pure water every day and getting enough good, sound sleep.

Also, stress reduction could be foremost on the mind of every doctor in the world, and an agressive stress reduction program given to every patient that walked thru the door regardless of their physical problem. Excess stress is probably the single-most significant factor in aging because it affects every system of the body simultaneously and destructively.

Blueberry isn't the only berry associated with good health benefits lately. Aronia berries are gatherin attention as well. Aronia berries, alternately called choke berries, which lend assistance for uninary tract health, circulation, strenthening of blood vessel walls and balancing of blood pressure.

There are indications that aronia berries may also be useful in gastrointestinal problems, as a cancer preventative and for assisting the body in preventing diabetes. These claims have not been evaluated by the FDA and most information to date has been ancedotal but aronia berries appear to offer health benefits.

Health Care Disclaimer: The antioxidant properties of blueberries are impressive. However, no single food can replace any needed medical attention required for properly addressing serious conditions such as heart disease or cancer. Adding anti-cancer and heart-healthy foods is something you should discuss with your doctor and get a nutritionist in on your health care decisions as well.
