Following the Example of Jesus: The best example Christians have of the value of spiritual fasting comes from Jesus Christ himself. Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights in the wilderness, in preparation for the biggest challenge a being can face. He was then tempted by Satan, betrayed by a beloved disciple, mocked by the very people he came to redeem and crucified on the cross. Other examples of fasting include Saul of Tarsus, later called Apostle Paul, who fasted for three days after being struck blind in an encounter with Jesus.
At the end of that time, Saul's blindness was cured and he turned from being someone who prosecuted those of the Christian faith to someone who became a Christian and lived his life spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. The old testament is sprinkled with examples of spiritual fasting and there are references in the new testament to this important spiritual practice. The book of Acts has several examples.
Christians are admonished to fast and, as an integral part of this spiritual fasting practice, to pray without ceasing.
It is this combination of releasing the distraction of food and engaging in concentrated prayer and meditation that makes spiritual fasting the powerful tool that it is for so many Christians. If you are a Christian and want to practice spiritual fasting, you should check with your doctor if you have any serious health conditions. If you are diabetic, this becomes a vital health consideration.
