what is fibromyalgia?

what is aromatherapy?

Have you been diagnosed with fibromyalgia or chronic fatique? As many as 5 million are said to be afflicted with fibro in the United States alone. What used to be a non-disease, resulting in patients being told it was "all in their head", has become one of the most common general medicine challenges of today's time.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia include pain, not in the bones, but in the muscles and ligaments. For many, this pain is very debilitating and can interfere with daily function and quality of life. The pain a person with fibo feels can be described as a burning or stabbing pain, flulike achiness or the infamous "raw nerve" sensation.

Other symptoms of fibromyalgia include mental fog, or fibrofog as it has been termed, inability to concentrate, headaches, intestinal disturbances, etc.

In other words, fibro is not a fun ailment to have! I know that personally, because I suffered from all those fibro symptoms myself for many years, to an intense degree. I think the worst times were when the raw nerve sensation was so bad that just having cover touching me felt awful. And I hated the fibro fog, which is a symptom that I still deal with sometimes, though never as severe now as it was in the beginning.

Researchers Find Physical Proof of Fibromyalgia Pain; Source: ABC News
According to ABC News, the results of a study on fibromyalgia conducted at the University of Alabama, one noticable difference in fibro sufferers was a decreased blood flow to areas of the brain which deal with pain and twice the normal level of a brain chemical called Substance P, a chemical in the brain which helps nervous system cells communicate with each other. The study postulated that elevated Substance P levels of Substance P may be the reason a person with fibromyalgia literally feels pain more than non-fibro people. More information on the link between substance P and fibromyalgia.

Medical Treatments for Fibromyalgia
Currently, there aren't any known treatments that "cure" fibro but there are accepted medical treatments for fibromyalgia, which is now recognized by doctors as a real medical condition. Traditional medicine addressed fibromyalgia primarily with the treatment of symptoms such as sleep problems and pain, through antidepressants and pain medications. Stretching, and flexibility exercises, are considered beneficial for the fibromyalgia patient as well.

Other drugs being tested for the treatment of fibromyalgia include interferon, Navoban, Growth Hormone and Neurotin. There is a real potential for dangerous interaction with some of these drugs and other medications a fibro patient might also be taking so be sure to discuss the risks with your doctor.

Although it has not been proven that repetive stress injuries or neck injuries cause fibro, there is a higher incidence of fibromyalgia among people who do repetive work or who have neck injuries so if a person has either situation, it could be a factor and, in the case of repetitive stress injuries being a factor, a change of work might be indicated.

Alternative Health Care for Fibromyalgia
In self-treating my own fibro symptoms, I've found the following beneficial:
Balance ph levels
Colloidal minerals, taken internally and applied topically at sites of pain
Massage from therapist with expertise in fibro trigger points
Craniosacral Work
Stretching and being stretched (Myofacial Release work)
Energetic healing (Reiki, etc.)
Low Force Chiropractic Care
Dealing with stress better (meditation, relaxation, creativity outlets)
EMF Protection (I have used Q-Link in the past, just be sure you get the original not a copycat version)
