The Natural Approach to Treating GERD
review by Ask a Healer
This is part of a series on gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD. Please read the introduction, What is GERD first, as well as any subsequent article sections to get the full benefit of this health care information.
Recommended Supportive Formula for GERd:
The Digestive Health UltraPack from Native Remedies contains three products that support your body's ability to restore and balance from Gerd. The ultrapack includes DigestAssist, Coloflush and Gastronic Dr.
These natural products help support healthy levels of normal microorganisms, yeast and bacteria in the colon and entire digestive tract and provide support for healthy digestion.
Natural Gerd Remedies and Suggestions
According to one of my own favorite natural health reference books, Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Jame Balch,
specific nutrients that are helpful with GERD include calcium, magnesium and potassium, which have an alkalizing effect that binds up stomach acid.
The book also suggests different herbs such as Aloe vera, which aids in healing of the intestinal tract, and Chamomile to relieve esophageal irritation. Note on aloe: Aloe vera juice will temporariliy discolor the inside of the colon wall so may make certain medical tests harder to read. Check with your doctor about this potential complication.
Aloe vera side effects
Dr. David Williams recommends ginger to help with acid reflux symptoms. Ginger is a wonderful herb with a lot of different health benefits but as is the case with almost anything that has medicinal properties, there are a few cautions as well. Please read up on ginger side effects before taking it for GERD or acid reflux.
Dr. Williams has further recommendations on his website, including probiotics. For anyone over 40, I just think adding a good probiotic makes sense. Dr. Williams has a lot of info on natural approaches to acid reflux and also has a list of foods to avoid with GERD so you might want to visit his website for more holistic health options.
Maintaining the proper pH can significantly help alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Ways to increase the alkalinity of the blood include eating alkaline foods, drinking alkaline water or using a water additive that alters water to be more alkaline.
Health Care Disclaimer: The information on GERD that you are reading is educational in nature and not expected to replace medical evaluation and/or needed treatment. Natural GERD remedies need to be approved by your doctor if you are under a doctor's care for GERD or acid reflux. Ask your doctor about adding probiotics to your daily diet, especially if you are over the age of 40 and don't eat a lot of foods containing them.
