What is Ringworm?
A common misconception about this condition is that a ringworm infection is literally caused by some kind of parasitic worm that infects the skin, in a manner somewhat similar to scabies. However, ringworm is not actually a worm but a fungal infection of the skin. Ringworm infections can affect skin on your body (tinea corporis), scalp (tinea capitis), groin area (tinea cruris, also called jock itch), or feet (tinea pedis, also called athlete's foot).
Is Ringworm Contagious? Yes, ringworm is contagious. The fungus may be spread by direct contact with a ringworm fungal growth area on someone's skin. You may also catch ringworm from pets, especially cats and from contact with contaminated areas like unwashed clothing (if your child has ringworm, handle dirty clothes with gloves) or shower wall and floor surfaces.
A ringworm infection affecting the scalp may be contracted through using the comb or brush of someone already infected. Be sure to sterilize all combs and brushes with antifungals before using again.
Natural remedies that are sometimes suggested for children with ringworm include applying apple cider vinegar or raw papaya puree but children may not take to having apple cider vinegar applied so often and they may like the papaya paste even less. With any remedy you choose to buy, just ask if it's safe for children.
