Important Safety Reminders for Parents

Things That Worked

When we play cards, the kids have a hard time holding very many cards. I used two round plastic lids (that came off oatmeal boxes) fastened together with paper fasteners (brads) to make an inexpensive card holder.

Wondering how to teach your school-aged child to swallow tablets? Our pediatrician suggested we use Tic-Tac breath mints since they are small and approximately the size of medications they might receive in a prescription. It worked great! (We used the orange ones.)

When he was very young, my son would cry at the photographer's so badly that we couldn't get a picture of him. I finally asked one photographer if we could bring balloons with us for our appointment. She was agreeable so I took several balloons. While the photographer was setting up I blew up a couple and made funny noises with them. I even turned one loose! He laughed at that, and relaxed. We got some excellent pictures that day!

Tired of all the pages you have to buy for your photo albums to hold pictures of your little darlings? We are trying something new: We trim the pictures around the main subject(s) and have a scrapbook-type look to our latest photo album. You can fit them anyway you want and you can always get several more on one page than if you leave the pictures whole. You can add captions with dates, too! Even 3- and 4-year-olds can help trim. We have some scrapbooking scissors which are lots of fun. This is a great family project. Of course, we leave the pictures whole of cherished places and scenes, such as beaches and sunsets.

Are you a parent of a pre-schooler whom you would like to encourage in reading and writing? See the link below for Tips for Encouraging Your Pre-Schooler. As a certified teacher and now a parent myself, I know that helping children want to read is as important as the reading itself. It can be a challenge to nurture and channel that enthusiasm, and I hope this helps! One of the most important things that a parent or any caretaker can do is to read aloud to children. You can visit the "Tips" page for more ideas.
