Flora of Gor


The following is an alphabetical list of the plants in the books. Obviously, there are many other varieties of plants, trees and flora on Gor but were never named in the books: as angel finds more she will add them to the list.

apricot:
apparently identical to the apricot of Earth; references exist of the fruit being sold in marketplaces of the Tahari.

Arctic flora: There are roughly 240 types of plants that grow in the arctic area, within five hundred pasangs of the north pole. Of these plants, none are poisonous or have thorns. They found no need to develop the defenses necessary to many southern plants.

blue short grass: a powder made of this grass once dried and crushed is used as an analgesic. It grows beneath the water of falls.

brak bush: a shrub whose leaves have a purgative effect when chewed; traditionally, branches of it are nailed to house doors during the Waiting Hand to discourage the entry of bad luck into the house for the New Year

cabbages: no description given.

carpet plant: a plant of the rain forest area inland of Schendi, having tendrils that are sometimes used as a source of drinking water

cherries: grown in Tyros.

clover: plant on Gor similar to the Earth plant of the same name.

dates : these come from the City of Tor; staple of the diet of the Tahari Tribesmen

dina: a small, short-stemmed flower indigenous to hillsides; sometimes called the 'slave flower', it is often used as a design for slave brands; sometimes used as a slave name

fan palm: found in the jungles of Schendi more than 20 feet high which spreads it's leaves in the form of an opened fan; an excellent source of water; as much as a liter at the base of each leaf's cupped stem.

fern: plant on Gor similar to the Earth plant of the same name.

festal: a type of shrubbery that grows in the Vosk delta and likely elsewhere.

flahdah: a tree of the Tahari having lanceolate leaves; the trunk leans, like that of a palm tree

flaminium: a largish scarlet flower having 5 petals

flower trees : grown in Turia, they have lovely, dangling loops of interwoven blossoms which hang from the curved branches of the tree. The clusters of flowers which; cluster upon cluster, grace hanging stems, are a bouquet in itself, for the trees are so bred that the clustered flowers emerge in subtle, delicate patterns of shades and hues.

garlic : not described in detail

Hogarthe trees: trees with white-barked with shimmering green leaves, that stand about fifty feet tall and are common in the vicinity of water in the Barrens. Their shape is reminiscent of Earth poplar trees.

Ka-la-na: a tree with very strong yellow wood, used for making bows.

kanda: a plant which grows in desert regions of Gor. It's roots are extremely toxic, even poisonous, but the leaves can be rolled and formed into strings which are chewed or sucked to produce a stimulant effect.

kanda shrub: A shrub of the Gorean desert; a lethal poison can be extracted from its roots while chewing the leaves has an addictive narcotic.

katch : foliated leaf vegetable similar to lettuce.

kes: a shrub whose salty, blue secondary roots are a main ingredient in sullage.

kort: a large, brownish-skinned, sphere-shaped vegetable of the Tahari usually some 6 inches in width.

larma: succulent fruit, rather like an apple.

leech plant: a hemovorous plant that fastens two hollow, fang-like thorns into its victim, through which it can suck the blood that nourishes it

liana vine: a rain forest plant which can be used as a source of drinking water

mul fungus: bland whitish fibrous vegetable-like material which is the main food of muls.

mushrooms: no description given.

needle tree: a tree of the Thentis region, whose oil is used in perfumes

olives : are commonly from the City of Tor. (referred to as Torian Olives); also Red Olives which come from the groves of Tyros.

onions: no description given.

palm trees : More than 1500 varieties of palm trees exist in the rainforest one of which is the Fan Palm more than 20 ft high and spreads it leaves in the form of a an opened fan it is an excellent source of pure water as much as one liter of water being found almost as though cupped at the base of each leaf's stem.

peas: no description given.

peppers: no description given.

pod tree: a tree in the rainforests and its inner bark is used to make bark cloth.

radishes: no description given.

rainforest, canopies zone: zone in rainforest that ranges from 60 to 125 Gorean feet above the jungle floor. This is the fantastic green cover which constitutes the main ceiling of the jungle. It is inhabited by an incredible number of birds, monkeys, reptiles, and insects.

rainforest, emergent zone: an ecological level of the rainforest 125 to 200 gorean feet above the jungle floor. In this highest level, the trees have thrust above the canopies below them. Mainly birds, particularly parrots, long-billed fleers, and needle-tailed lits inhabit this zone.

rainforest, ground zone: the 'undergrowth' of the rainforest. Extending from the ground to the lower canopies, this ecological zone is home to species of birds, snakes and insects. Many small animals, such as the giani, jit monkeys and four toed leaf urts are found in this zone as well. On the floor itself are marsupials, tarsk, twenty kinds of single-horned tabuk, and jungle larls and panthers.

ram-berry: small, succulent purple berries.

redfruit: similar in flesh and taste to apples of earth origins

rence : a water plant, the grain is eaten and the stems harvested and pressed into paper or woven into cloth.

Sa-Tarna: grain, specifically wheat, yellow

sip root: a bitter root whose extract is the active ingredient in slave wine

sul: golden leafed vine which bears starchy golden brown fruit.

Ta grapes: purple fruit similar to earth grapes comes from the Isle of Cos.

talender: delicate, yellow petaled meadow flower, symbolic of feminine love and beauty; a crown of talendars is often worn by a free woman during the Companionship ceremony; worn in a slave girl's hair, it is a silent plea for her to be raped

telekint: a plant of the Tahari; its roots, mashed and mixed with water, provide a red dye

tem: a tree which produces a black wood that is very strong; ebony?

teriotrope: a colorful and fragrant flower.

teslik: a plant whose extract is the active ingredient in breeding wine

tor shrub: shrub, has various other names but this name translates as "bright shrub" or "shrub of light." It has abundant bright flowers, either yellow or white. It blooms in the fall and does not grow higher than a man's waist. It can be found in the Vosk delta and elsewhere.

tospit: a bitter, juicy citrus fruit

tur: a reddish tree having a large trunk

turl bush: bush used by the red savages to waterproof hides.

turnip: grown on the oasis of the Tahari

tur-pah: an edible tree parasite with curly, red, ovate leaves; grows on the tur tree; a main ingredient in sullage

vangis: type of produce sold at market; detailed description unavailable.

veminium: a bluish wild flower commonly found on the lower ranges of the Thentis mountains; used in perfumes

veminium, desert: small, purplish flower found in the Tahari; used in perfumes

verr grass: a type of common grass on Gor.

vine, liana: a rainforest plant which can be used as a source of drinking water.

Violet grass: patches of stalky grass, one of several hues used in pleasure gardens of Turia.
