The unit is Tennessee largest with about four-thousand members now training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. The 278th has 30 armories from the Tri-Cities to Jackson.
Major Chris Bell says the Army added some additional units, so the 278th no longer looks exactly like an armored cavalry regiment on paper -- hence the designation change.
Bell says when the 278th some home, it will revert to an armored cavalry division.
The first time the unit bore the regimental combat team name was in 1947 when the 278th Armored Infantry Battalion was expanded.
