The bridge over Hamilton Creek is past crossing. It has been cond____ for some time. (The word wasn't condemned but could not make it out. If this is the bridge that I think it is they fixed it but then it caved in completely in 1946 and we couldn't cross it when we went down to grandma's. They ended up shutting that road down forever. Mom had me, Marlene, Duane and Marilyn, about 7 months old and we started out in a taxi for grandpa's. The bridge had caved in just a little while before so we went in by the little old road by Louis McGehee's. The taxi got stuck right by the caved in bridge but thankfully on the right side near grandpa's. We left the taxi driver, our luggage and started walking the 1 1/2 miles to grandpa's. There was a bull bellowing and everytime Marilyn would cry, he would bellow. We were all scared including mom, it was pitch dark and we had no flashlight even. Mom would carry Marilyn and she wouldn't cry, if Marlene or I tried to carry her she would scream and the bull would bellow, mom was getting so tired. We found out later that the bull was a mean one too. We arrived at grandpas and he had to walk over to Uncle Alva's, a long walk and they had to go get the taxi driver out and get our luggage. My grandmother, Amanda Edwards House, had died out in Albuquerque, dad went to the funeral and we went down to my grandparents. They didn't know we were coming or Uncle Alva would have met us at the bus station. It was a spur of the moment decision. They had the worst ice storm that they remembered while we were down there, lots of memories there. No buses were running, Jimmie Kelly, one of Aunt Edna's brothers slid [grin] us back to Springfield in a car with no heater to Edward Kelly's, another brother of Aunt Edna's who had married my dad's cousin Stella East. We stayed at their home until we could get a train on into Cherryvale, KS where dad met us. We didn't have a car and I have never remembered who came to pick us up. It was a trip that none of us ever forgot except maybe Duane and Marilyn, Marilyn sure got told down the years about her big mouth, grin)
