Charles Fielden, auto mechanic, employed by B. L. Gaddis, met sudden death about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon when a car in which he was riding overturned on a side road just north of the Johnstone park near the railroad crossing. The car, a Dodge coupe, was driven by Frank Shipley, 106 South Cheyenne avenue. Frank Labadie of 516 South Wyandotte avenue, was also a passenger in the car. Labadie and Shipley escaped injury.
According to Mr. Ladabie, they were going to look at some timber northwest of town which he had purchased. Fielden was accompanying them on the trip for the ride. Mr. Labadie was riding between the other two occupants of the car. He said that the car skidded on the slippery road and that as it started to turn over Fielden opened the door and apparently attempted to jump from the machine. It is believed that his head caught in the door and the weight of the car crushed it as it fell on the side, Fielden's head was mashed like a broken egg shell and death was instantaneous. It was reported that shortly after the tragedy, Shipley who was stunned by the death of his friend, threatened to take his life. The trio had also planned to do some hunting while in the woods northwest of town and took dogs and guns along with them. Fielden was 31 years old and is survived by his widow and four children. He lived at 120 South Seminole avenue. The body is at the Neekamp Funeral Home pending burial.
