So, you're wondering what's up with all those names and numbers Christians are always throwing about.
These are not a part of the original writings. These are notations to make it easier for readers to find specific lines of text. When Scripture took on written form, Christians found a reference system to be able to point others to a single line among the many thousands was needed. Hence, the names and numbers.
The names correspond to the title of each of the 66 books within the Bible. In our example, we are looking at the book of John. The first number following the name is the number of the chapter. We're looking for Chapter 3 of the book of John. The next number follows a colon and is the number of the verse (or line) in the designated chapter. In our case the 16th verse. John 3:16, then means the 16th verse in the third chapter of the book of John.
