Pictured above is a Leopard Gecko with an internal parasite. Notice how emaciated it looks, the tail is nothing and you can see it looks skeletal. You have to pay extra attention because when your Leo looks like this its probably too late :(
Always keep leopard geckos housing and substrate clean, but when a Leo is sick you must clean the cage more often (remove any urine or fecal matter) proper hygiene is a must. Leopard geckos are very resilient lizards and don't get sick very often, but to keep your gecko safe never introduce a new gecko into the cage until it goes through a quarantine (house it by itself). While the Leo is in quarantine observe its physical appearance, fecal matter, and temperament. When a Leo starts to have one or some of the symptoms below you first need to quarantine your gecko then call your vet.
Please refer to this site for more detailed information
- Change in color (this is a sign of stress in a Leo)
- Weight Loss (look at the tail a healthy Leo should have a fat tail)
- Is your Leo eating less or more?
- Is there any noticeable changes in the feces or urine (loose or hard stool more or less often) ?
- Is there any changes in behavior (lethargy, hyperactivity, hiding more, or active during strange times of the day)?
- Have there been any changes in its physical appearance (swelling, lumps, limping, scabs, gaping of the mouth, or blisters
- Has your Leo been experiencing Tremors (excessive shaking)
This is a collection of facts that I have gathered from various sources to inform. I am in no way a professional in the field of herpetology and in the event that your animal falls ill you need to contact your vet.
