It began with an automated distress call from the Galvan System, and recieved by the USS Enterprise-E. The diplomatic transport from Trill, the Tynan, was under attack, with Ambassador Kareel Odan onboard. Another sleepless night on Deep Space Nine for Lieutenant Ezri Dax. As Doctor Julian Bashir slept peacefully, she was tossing and turning, unsure of herself and angry about what she had said to him. As she looked out at the stars, Ezri recieved a Priority One message. Doctor Lenara Kahn of Trill was a hostage, and Ezri was to deliver the ransom to free her. Chief of Security Ro Laren had already decoded the message, and made her report to Colonel Kira Nerys while Ezri was running to Ops. In the Galvan System, the Enterprise-E found the that the Tynan was crashing to the surface of Galvan III. No life signs were detected, but Commander Will Riker, Lieutenant Commander Data, and Doctor Beverly Crusher beamed down to the surface, to search for survivors anyway. Ambassador Odan was found, in an escape pod that was still attached to the ship. The Defiant with Elias Vaughn in command was en route to the rendevous with Kahn's kidnappers at the Tenaran Ice Cliffs on Trill. Ambassador Odan was badly injured, and Doctor Crusher was forced to remove the symbiont. The Enterprise-E went to warp nine, to get Odan back to Trill as soon as possible. The transport's sensor logs were destroyed in the crash, and the Enterprise-E's own sensor records showed that the attackers scrambled their identification codes. Captain Jean-Luc Picard asked Counselor Deanna Troi to enter the protien pool that housed the Odan symbiont, to see if the symbiont could tell them who attacked the Tynan. But, the telepathic signals sent out from the symbiont were too much for Troi, and she was knocked out. In orbit of Trill, Doctor Bashir, Lieutanent Dax and Science Officer Thirashar ch'Thane were beamed down to the surface, with the five kilos of protomatter the kidnappers had demanded. After Dax found Doctor Kahn half-buried in the snow, the Away Team quickly came under attack. The Defiant's transporters were blocked, so Commander Vaughn sent down two shuttles in a rescue attempt. But they were too late, and Ezri Dax was taken by the attackers, while Kahn was left behind. As Ezri rematerialzed in the terrorist stronghold, she came face to face with the enemy - Verad. An unjoined Trill who once tried to steal the Dax symbiont from Jadzia and escape to the Gamma Quadrant, he know believed that the symbionts were an infestation and the joined Trills of their society were possessed. Verad decided to spread a disease that would force the symbiont's to reject their humanoid hosts, and that the unjoined Trill would not be able to carry a symbiont. The retrovirus would kill the joined Trill, and make the unjoined carriers of the disease.
The crews of the Defiant and the Enterprise-E will have to work together to stop Verad and save Trill society.
