Review/Summary of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Avatar, Book Two

Review/Summary by Thomas Sharp

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Avatar, Book Two is, of course, the continuation of the story that started with Book One. Both were written by S.D. Perry. If you put the two covers together, you get a really cool picture of Colonel Kira Nerys, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Taran’atar the Jem’Hadar, Commander Elias Vaughn and Lieutenant Ro Laren.

The story resumes with Odo, sitting on the small rock outcropping in the middle of the Great Link, wondering if he did the right thing by sending the Jem’Hadar to Deep Space Nine, but confident that Colonel Kira would be able to handle the soldier.

Ro has turned the translation of the prophecy over to Kira, who quickly denounces it as a piece of fiction, not worth considering.

Nog is angry because Ezri suggested that the Jem’Hadar be moved from the holding cells in the security office to a cargo bay, so he would have more room, and a little more freedom. She thought it would help with trust issues, but Nog saw it as a major, perhaps even a fatal, error.

Vaughn has learned, due to his high security clearance, about the fleet heading for the wormhole, but can’t tell Picard about it.

Jake has bought a shuttle from Quark, using latinum that his father won from Jadzia Dax, when she was alive. And from Nog, he learned that the wreckage around the wormhole from the previous battle was setting off the wormhole to open. Jake told everyone that he was headed for Earth when he left the station on the shuttle Venture.

In the meantime, Ro has learned the identity of the killer, and the motive behind the murder of the prylar.

All this, and more are in the second book of the Deep Space Nine Relaunch. S.D. Perry successfully portrays each character, both the old and the new. The relationships between Ro and Kira, Quark and Ro, Nog and ch’Thane, and Ezri and Bashir are very believable, and fit with how a fan would think they would get along. With Avatar, Abyss and the future Relaunch novels set to be released over the next two years, it is comforting for this particular fan that the adventures on Deep Space Nine will continue.
