The above is an example of Evan's packing list. Much of the items on this list I already owned from previous activities and trips.
Of the stuff that we didn't own we shopped around and bought many items when they were on sale.
Patagonia in Dublin is an outlet store. They gave me EUR220 off my Goretex jacket which is a 3 layer XCR goretex because it was last seasons! They have very good deals every now and again.
Great Outdoors gives a 10% discount if you have a YHA (youth hostel association) card but you have to ask for it.
We already had sleeping bags but we have been warned that it gets very cold in the Andes and so we would need a four season expedition sleeping bag and mummy liner. We could have spent up to EUR500 on a bag but we're not climbing Everest and we both have bivvy bags if need be!
We have also bought "pac safe" which is a wire mesh with locking device which fits over the rucksack. It weighs in at a hefty 1.5llbs but it may save us losing everything we own. We shall soon see!
