Tree Tour: Manitoba Maple/Boxelder

Location: (2004)
Rotary Park, west of pond.

  • Botanical Name: Acer negundo
  • Drought Tolerant/Sun/Attracts Wildlife
  • Height & Spread: 12m x 8m
  • Form: open spreading; main trunk often divides near the bottom
  • Leaf: opposite; compound with 3-5 leaflets;
    terminal leaflet often three-lobed; yellow in fall
  • Bark: brownish-grey to black becoming furrowed with age
  • Flower: yellowish-green; before leaves
  • Fruit: male or female trees; two-winged seedpods hang in clusters
  • Problems: aphids drip honeydew; box elder beetles; drops light
    leaves all summer; very susceptible to 2,4-D; watersprouts;
    germination of seeds from females trees
  • Use: excellent shelterbelt tree; can be tapped for maple syrup;
    provides food and cover for birds.
  • Use: good, long-lived specimen tree for small yards; berries are
    eaten by birds, eaten fresh and used in jam.
