Tree Tour: Ponderosa Pine

Location: (2004)
Rotary Park, west of Albert Memorial Bridge.

  • Botanical Name: Pinus ponderosa
  • Drought Tolerant/Sun/Attracts Wildlife
  • Height & Spread: 15m x 6m
  • Form: cylindrical, taproot
  • Leaf: dull green needles are 15-20cm long in bundles of three
  • Bark: orange-brown; furrowed
  • Fruit: large, 10cm by 7.5cm cones armed with sharp bristles
  • Use: good, long-lived specimen tree; provides winter cover for birds
