Tree Tour: Silver Buffaloberry

Location: (2004)
Rotary Park, west of pond.

  • Botanical Name: Shepherdia argentea
  • Drought Tolerant/Sun/Attracts Wildlife
  • Height & Spread: 5m x 4m
  • Form: ball-shaped but with irregular branching habit; suckers
  • Leaf: opposite; silver; oval; thorns at tip of lateral branches
  • Flower: inconspicuous yellow flowers in May; male and female flowers
    on seperate plants, both are needed for fruit set
  • Fruit: sour, red berries in tight clusters along stem
  • Use: good for wildlife planting because of its suckering habit;
    provides good food and cover for birds; used for jam and jelly
