Starfleet Medical:

Starfleet Medical has had a long and distinguished history. Traditionally pioneers in the medical field, Starfleet can boat the most up to date practices and equipment in it's facilities, as well as the most highly trained personnel. Starfleet Medical has traditionally attracted the brightest minds and intellects in the medical field from across the entire galaxy.

The department has grown so large that it has it's own sub-academy at the Starfleet Academy on Earth. Medical Cadets take an overload of medically related courses for four years, and upon graduation are very competent in their field. The Starfleet Medical Academy is very tough to get through, and is an honor to graduate from. All Starfleet Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses and Counselors go through the Academy.

It is important to note that not only does Starfleet Medical encompass clinical medicine, it also encompasses psychology and counseling. Also, Medics and Corpsman go through the Academy as well before stationing on a ship or base. Often many Intelligence Specialists from Starfleet Security and Tactical are required to take their psychology courses from Starfleet Medical to ensure that they receive the highest possible level of education.

Non-Commissioned Medical personnel also go through a grueling set of medical courses after basic training. Those that have been selected to serve as Marine Corpsmen (as the SFMC has no medics of it's own) then must go through Starfleet Marine Basic Training. As a result a particularly tough and competent breed of medics has emerged.

The Medical department on a starship is responsible for the general health of the entire crew and any passengers. The Medical department encompasses all sickbays and aid stations, as well as dentistry and pharmacies. Most of these are located on one deck, with Main Sickbay being the central hub.

Medical officers must always work hard to make sure that the ship's crew is healthy both physically and mentally, and that any new disease is studies and logged into the medical database. Often times Medical personnel are called upon to effect rapid cures of strange alien diseases that have never been encountered before. Their historical success in this field is in no small part due to their extensive, and rigorous medical training.

Positions:

Chief Medical Officer - The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for the physical health of the entire crew, but does more than patch up injured crew members. His/her function is to ensure that they do not get sick or injured to begin with, and to this end monitors their health and conditioning with regular check ups. If necessary, the Chief Medical Officer can remove anyone from duty, even a commanding officer. Besides this s/he is available to provide medical advice to any individual who requests it. The CMO must be a Doctor, and will also perform their normal medical duties as well.  With regards to the medical care of ship personnel, if there is a disagreement between doctors on the method of treatment to pursue, the CMO will make the final decision. Additionally the Chief is also responsible for all aspect of the medical deck, such as the Medical labs, Surgical sweats and Dentistry's, and also is a department head and a member of the Senior Staff and responsible for all the crew members in her/his department and duty rosters.

Assistant Chief Medical Officer - The ACMO is the Chief Medical Officer's Right Hand in all matters concerning the department. Often times a skilled surgeon and physician, the ACMO often supervises the nurses and other personnel in patient recovery and day to day treatment. He or she also assists the CMO in duty rotations, and keeping the ship's medical database up to date at all times.

Medical Officer - Medical Officers are the backbone of the medical department, and  undertake the majority of the work aboard the ship, examining the crew, and administering medical care under the instruction of the Chief Medical Officer and Assistant Chief Medical Officer.

Head Nurse - The Head Nurse oversees all the Nurses currently aboard, ensuring they are assigned to task and working as required in there area. Additionally the Head nurse performs the normal duties of the nurse, assisting the Duty Medical Officer in sickbay.

Nurse - Nurses are trained in basic medical care, and are capable of dealing with less serious medical cases. In more serious matters the nurse assist the Medical Officers in the examination and administration of medical care, be this injecting required drugs, or simply assuring the injured party that they are in capable hands. The Nurses also maintain the medical wards, overseeing the patients and ensuring they are receiving medication and care as instructed by the Medical Officers.

Medics/Corpsmen - Medics are trained in advanced medical care in relation to combat injuries and illnesses.  They are assigned to away missions where there is the element of physical danger. The medics also help maintain the medical wards like nurses, overseeing the patients and ensuring they are receiving medication and care as instructed by the Medical Officer. The Corpsman is a Medic assigned to the SFMC. The Marines have no medics of their own, and as a result Starfleet Medical supplies them. These medics are not only trained in the ways of medicine, but as full fledged combat troops should the need arise. Therefore only the most fit and determined, and those seeking danger and adventure are encouraged to become Corpsmen.

Specialists - Specialist include any and all medical specialists. Surgeons, Therapists and the like are all considered specialists. The Specialist is an expert in her field, and on larger starships and starbases, often a leading authority with years of experience.

Counselor - The ship's counselor is responsible for the overall morale of the crew, and their mental health. They are considered a part of the medical department, and their credentials list them as psychologists, as this is the field of study one goes through to become a counselor.
