Name- In 2377, she escaped in a pod when that ship was destroyed and in the midst of all the chaos, she was demoted to Ensign for the alleged death of three officers in a scurry to escape, an accusation that, to this day, Yarel adamantly denies. She knows she was framed and intends to find the real culprit. In extreme situations, especially when she feels threatened, Yarel has shown that her temper and physical strength can get the better of her. (As indicated in her Personnel Record on more than one occasion.) Can be a loner at times. Although she looks like everyone else, she knows she is different, and therefore, sets up barriers when it comes to trusting others. Yarel can work well with others, but prefers to work alone. That way, she can avoid idle chatter. She can achieve small talk, it's just that she has nothing good to say. Those who don't know her might find her cold and unapproachable. The solitude may be self-imposed, but once she is familiar and comfortable with her surroundings (which doesn't take long), the ice will melt. In addition, despite deep respect for Vulcan heritage and discipline, she has also embraced the Human and Betazoid part of her being. Will firmly stand her ground for her beliefs (which can, at times, be a weakness). Vulcan teachings have allowed Yarel to endure immense amounts of pain, both physical and psychological. Telepathic and empathic abilities allow her to make assessments about others without even speaking to them. Would rather remain neutral in situations and is a quick study. She still has difficulty dealing with the fact that her Mother's family wants nothing to do with her. She has interacted with many Vulcans and it's quite possible that she may have already met her and not have even known it. It has not deterred her in her interactions with Vulcans and she will not be ashamed for being born out of love. She carries a deep resentment towards Romulans--for bringing her parents together, then breaking them apart. Yarel has been having nightmares, but more of visions over the last few years. She also hears voices and believes it has something to do with her telepathic/empathic abilities. Her nightmares of her shuttlecraft accident are so vivid that she wakes up at night feeling the intense pain (as a child she had yet to learn how to control her emotions). Reliving the accident has brought a new meaning of "out of control" to her life-something Yarel isn't too keen on maintaining. Now, after the onslaught of rumors involving her mother as well as her own past, Yarel believes that there's a connection between the shuttle accident and her mother-although trying to get answers from her father is like pulling teeth. ------------------------------------------------------------
Her father, John Tsai, was born to a Chinese-Canadian father (Human) and a Betazoid mother. Currently a Starfleet Captain aboard the Intrepid-class ship, U.S.S. Liberty, it was the Ambassador-class U.S.S. Lincoln that had been a playground in her youth. She knows very little about her mother, the information she had acquired from her paternal grandparents had undoubtedly been tainted. What she did know was that she was named after her mother's childhood mentor, a teacher. Yarel's parents met while her father, then Commander aboard the U.S.S. Lincoln, was on an away mission. Her mother was a Vulcan Ambassador named Vash`Ka. They were in the midst of working out peace talks strategies with the Romulans, when the encounter had gone awry. Romulans (whom at this point were not invited to the meetings) intercepted and a transport ship filled with hundreds of Starfleet personnel and Vulcans alike was destroyed. Her parents, along with a dozen or so others, had fled their respective ships in escape pods and sought refuge on a nearby M-class planet. All but crash landing, they were able to salvage whatever usable parts they could from their escape pods, coupled with the bare necessities they took with them from their ships. They were able to set up camp with forcefields and it would be at this makeshift home that they would develop an intense affection for each other. Despite the sufficient food and shelter they had managed, the environs were still unsatisfactory for the purposes of their mission. They had worked tirelessly to get their communications systems up and running. They had managed to send a distress beacon and finally, after eighteen weeks on the planet they had come to call "New Eden," they were going home. Commander Tsai didn't realize how much he loved Vash`Ka. He never realized it until he was back on his ship. Still, despite all they had been through together, he received not even a sub-space transmission from her. Several months had passed and not a word. Due to the Romulan's disruption, Starfleet Command took over the peace talks so he was off the assignment; he had no reason to communicate any further with her. He had all but forgotten the ephemeral bliss they had shared until one day, he received a distress call; not quite a distress call but rather urgent nonetheless. He had the bridge when they received a cryptic message citing a family emergency. The message was audio only and brief; merely stating coordinates and that a loved one's life was at stake. Fearing that trying to get a message back home would take too long, he answered the call and, with permission from his captain, accompanied by a fellow crewman, took a shuttlecraft to the stated coordinates. He received the shock of his life (thus far) upon seeing a tiny pod floating in space. A sensor sweep revealed an ion trail indicative of a Vulcan ship that had recently left the area, but had already gone to warp. After checking for life signs, his crewman told him that there was one humanoid life form aboard the pod. They beamed the pod onboard only to discover that there was a baby within. As soon as the pod was opened an automated message was activated from within the pod cavity (Attached as Narrative below). "Hello, John." The face that appeared on the viewscreen suddenly flooded his memories and he instantly felt a dull ache in his chest. His heart must have skipped a beat in anticipation of what the message would reveal-and he would be correct. "Her name is Yarel. She is just over a year old now. As you can see, she does not look Vulcan at all. Her facial features, even her ears. If it were not for her pale green blood-" The message just seemed to cut off at the word. He was about to yell at the computer when another message, recorded hours after the first, began to playback. "For obvious reasons, I cannot care for her here. My family-the council, it is just not possible. You have to understand-this is the best way, the only way for her to grow up. I leave her to you for I know that you will allow her this opportunity." "We will have no further communication on this. I would rather you did not try to contact me. When she is old enough, I entrust that you will speak kind words of me, but discourage her from trying to seek me out. Even this message will be corrupt after you view it. She is not to know of me. It is for the best. She has your dark hair and your rambunctious nature. Treat her well. Live long and prosper." The screen went blank. It was almost as blank as the cold eyes that sent the message. He knew Vulcans to be stoic, but she was just abandoning her child and she didn't seem to care! Given up by force? False coercion? Or was she trying to live up to the status quo? Nevertheless, he was now faced with a new responsibility-this responsibility was currently gurgling and staring up at him with intense green eyes. Such a beautiful baby; he would make sure that she would live a beautiful life. That was his new mission. As a little girl aboard her father's ship, Yarel instantly fell in love with space exploration. The USS Liberty, an Excelsior-class starship, was the first home she could remember. At her father's request, Yarel's grandmother (his mother) lived onboard and her strict purpose there was to help Yarel develop her empathic skills. She had other instructors as well and studied many subjects that would help prepare her for Starfleet Academy. But for Yarel, a person who much rather enjoyed working hands-on, being allowed to go on away missions (as a civilian) or logging in time on the holodeck is where she felt she learned the most. One of her more favorite lessons were when her cousin, Horatio Tsai, would teach her how to pilot a shuttle craft. On more than one occasion she had been able to really fly one in space, but most of the tutorials took place in holo-simulations. By modifying a few parameters, she had been able to pilot the Liberty in various tactical situations, so she had developed an avid interest in piloting. When she was a little older, her grandmother introduced her to one of her colleagues who introduced her to Vulcan philosophy and teachings. By the time she was a teenager, Yarel had exceptional command of her telepathic and empathic abilities. And, as each year passed, more and more questions she had regarding her mother and her past were eluded. To keep her mind off the probing questions that kept popping up in her mind, she would spend her free time tinkering with gadgets-either broken or things she broke. But she always found a way to repair things onboard, making her somewhat of an engineer. Yarel felt that since she wasn't getting the answers she needed aboard his ship, she needed to get away from it for a while. Accompanied by her grandmother, she went to live on Earth for the first time-actually it was the first time she lived on land at all. She finished grade school in Ontario, Canada, before moving to live with her uncle and aunt in New York where her aunt taught high school. It was during this time where her uncle, a 20th century buff, got her hooked on history. Their favorite things to do were to watch old movies, as well as explore what it was like on earth during that time in various holodeck simulations. Still, Yarel had many questions left unanswered, so on her sixteenth birthday, she gave herself a gift; an application to Starfleet Academy. See also Addenda below. Medical (brief): Yarel Tsai maintains good health and has no known medical complications. Family-
