------------------------------------------------------------ Starfleet Science has a long history steeped in tradition. Starfleet scientists have always been among the leaders in their fields, propelling the Federation to the front of the technology race. On vessels and instillations, Starfleet scientists are always researching new discoveries, or working with engineers to make newer, better technologies. Starfleet Sciences are premier departments on deep space vessels charged with exploration. Often these staffs are filled with the brightest minds in a particular field, ensuring that when a Federation starship encounters something new, it's best people are there to research it. All through Starfleet's history, the greatest discoveries have been made by explorer type ships, and the Starfleet personnel aboard them. The science department on a starship is a very important one, as these officers and crewmen are responsible for the eyes and ears of the ship - the sensor arrays. Science officers work around the clock on experiments of varying natures. Each science department on a starship has a variety of specialists in various fields. On an exploratory cruiser such as the USS Discovery, the science staff is much larger, and more elite than it normally is on other starships. Positions: Chief Science Officer - The Chief Science Officer is responsible for all the scientific data the ship/facility collects, and the distribution of such data to specific section within the department for analysis. He or she is also responsible with providing the ship's captain with scientific information needed for command decisions. He or she also is a department head and a member of the Senior Staff and responsible for all the crew members in her/his department and duty rosters. Often times the Chief Science Officer has a solid background in a variety of fields. This assists him or her in working with the department, and ship as a whole. Assistant Chief Science Officer - The Assistant Chief Science Officer assists Chief in all areas, such as administration, and analysis of scientific data. The Assistant Chief often take part in specific analysis of important data along with the Chief Science Officer, but however spends most time overseeing current project and their section heads. Science Officer - There are several Science Officer aboard a starship. Science Officers are often generalists in nature, having experience in several fields. They are assigned to their duties by the Chief Science Officer and his Assistant. Assignments include work for the Specialized Section heads, as well as duties for work been carried out by the Chief and Assistant. They answer to the Chief and Assistant. Science Officer, or the section head they are assigned to. Anthropologist - These officers are in the Alien Cultures Section of the department, and have close ties with History. This role involves the study of all newly discovered alien species and life forms, from the long dead to thriving. There knowledge also involves current known alien species. Astrometrics/Stellar Cartography Officer - These officers work in the Astrometrics labs and Stellar Cartography. They are responsible for keeping up to date stellar maps, as well as mapping new regions of space as the ship encounters them. This section works closely with the physics section. Biologist - This position entails the study of biology, botany, zoology and many more Life Sciences. On larger ships there many be a number of Science Officers within this section, under the lead of the Biologist. Historian - This role entails the detailed study of civilizations past histories, and there implication and involvement in the future development of cultures. Has close ties to the Alien Culture Section, and reports to the CSO or ASO. Together with the anthropologist, the two sections often prove crucial in first contact situations with alien species, or the discovery of ancient ruins. The ship's archaeologist is a historian, and works in this section. Language Specialist - The Language Specialist is in charge of the Linguistics section. This role involves the study of new and old languages and text in an attempt to better understand and interpret there meaning. Often times this section makes sure the software used by the Universal Translator is up to date, and at optimum. Physicist - Specialized Science Officer in charge of the Physics Section. This role entails the study of mathematical calculations and there implication and viability on the natural physics of the universe. It also involves the study of the natural physics of the universe and attempts to decipher them. Has close ties with the Stellar Cartographer and Astrometrics Section. Geologist - This officer has a vast knowledge of geology, and assists on any project that requires a specialist of this nature. Often times they work closely with the Chemist and Biologist when cataloging new worlds. Chemist - A science officer that specializes in chemistry, the chemist is a critical part of the science department. Often cross trained with Medical, the Chemists work not only on scientific projects, but also the development of new materials and medicines. Uniform: Standard
