The Origins of Special Operations Units...

Special Operations units date back to the twentieth century, the most publicized being the United States Navy S.E.A.L.'s.   Current Special Operations units fulfill similar roles in the more militaristic operations of Starfleet.  Trained for a variety of high stress situations and in a variety of combat and infiltration techniques, Special Operations handle situations that normal security are not equipped or qualified for.

Special Operations emerged shortly after the Dominion War, occurring between 2373 and 2375.  During the Dominion War, Starfleet found a need for specialized troops to gather data, carry out high-risk, small-scale operations, and do so with little or no outside support, undetected.

As the Discovery has been designed for solo, deep space, five-year missions, Starfleet felt it necessary to include a small contingent of Special Operations.  The current responsibilities of Special Operations includes: extra security, standard and high-risk away-missions, and ships' defense, working with security, tactical, and the Discovery's contingent of Starfleet Marines.

Positions:

Detachment Commander - The team leader, he is responsible for leading the team into hostile areas and coordinating the mission.

Special Operations Officer - Generally an officer with some experience, well rounded in several specialties. Often times a Special Operations "officer" serves as a detachment leader, detachment executive, or operates alone as an intelligence officer or undercover agent.

Intelligence Specialist - organizes all intelligence gathering during Special Operations missions and then and presents it to the ship's Chief Security Officer once back on the ship. S/he offers advice on the mission, objectives, or enemy forces during the mission. S/he must be able to take over for the team leader if needed.

Specialists - There are specialists in every area. Typically these include computer specialists, infiltration specialists, marksmen and heavy weapons specialists and the like. A specialist is highly trained in his or her area of expertise, and can be considered an expert.

Medic - This is a Special Operations officer who has been trained by Starfleet Medical as well as the Special Operations school. These medics are more like corpsmen, required not only to be doctors, but outstanding soldiers as well.
