Confluence Trip 2006

Day 6

Today we prepared a cooked breakfast, now that there was no pressure on us to reach a specific point. After breaking camp we proceeded to Shisr for fuel then drove to an old building that we had spotted on our way to N19E53.

The ruins turned out to be what is thought to be LOST CITY OF UBAR, and had also been visited by Sir Ranulph Fiennes with a team also using Land Rover Discoverys.

Another 70Km of unsealed road awaited us and an hour later we were back on smooth blacktop heading north to Muscat with occasional stops for fuel, food and another unexplainable cut out on Streaky’s Disco as we approached Adam as well as an oil leak from the crankshaft oil seal and a leaking power steering reservoir.

At 1930 we were in the bar at the Sheraton Hotel in Muscat downing a couple of pints before showering etc and having dinner.

Day 7

I woke up at my usual time and proceed down to the vehicles to collect the chip from my GPS, when I noticed a large pool of something under Streaky’s Disco. It turned out to be ATF and a more permanent fix was made before we headed off to the Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum which houses some interesting Solihull specimens including a Centuar.

By 1700 I was back in Dubai and Streaky back in Ajman, now relaxed although both our vehicles in need of a good cleaning having completed 3,482 Km over some very variable terrain in the last seven days.

As a post script to this trip, Streaky has been reimbursed by the garage that botched up his service and cost us 1 day on the trip.
