Production on WB's "Tarzan" has just been halted and the series
is placed on hiatus, often a precursor to cancelation.
"Tarzan" may continue airing through the November ratings
sweeps, a WB spokesman said.
A key ratings period used to set advertising rates, sweeps
can see schedule upheavals as networks pull low-rated series.
The 9 p.m. EST Sunday series, starring Travis Fimmel in an urban
twist on the jungle tale,
drew 2.8 million viewers last week and ranked 112th among primetime
programs.

Joins Tarzan
Lucy Lawless is joining the cast of The WB's Tarzan as
Kathleen Clayton, Tarzan's Aunt and a New York publisher that clashes with
Richard Clayton (Mitch Pileggi) over their nephew. Indications are
that the series will focus more on the things going on around Tarzan and
less on Jane, thus the dropping of "and Jane" from the series' name.
As part of the deal, Lawless will be in an exclusive series development
deal with WB for next season.

WB's Tarzan... fills the screen with cool ambience and
hot bodies, but if it's something deeper you want, anything beyond rippling
muscles, martial arts moves and soulful gazes, better reach for the Edgar
Rice Burroughs novel … Tarzan escapes so often and so easily that he could
give lessons to David Copperfield. … [Travis Fimmel's] dialogue rarely
exceeds four-word sentences, but then, he wasn't tabbed for this role because
of his way with Shakespeare. He handles longing stares just fine. … in
this series, the priority doesn't seem to be on character development.

Variety says:
… infused with scads of potential but also some problematic
underpinnings. … some of the best roof-scaling acrobatics
since "Spider-Man" … Unless they develop something to
explain his timely arrival an unnecessarily grim addition to the hour.
… Because Tarzan isn't the talkative type, Callies will need to be someone
to whom the WB's youthful femme audience can relate, and while she's pretty
enough, the character doesn't spark here. … producers will need a firmer
grip on the premise if they want to reach the higher branches.
USA Today gives it two stars (out of four) and says:
Him Tarzan, me bored. … This series has a jungle-full
of problems, but we might as well start with the insolvable one: underwear-model-turned-actor
Travis Fimmel as Tarzan. … the spell is broken when he moves or speaks.
… Still, even with a better actor, Tarzan would be no more than precisely
what it is: yet another bland WB attempt to replicate the success of Smallville.
Once again, we get a variant on the formula Smallville borrowed from Buffy:
an old genre and familiar hero with a younger cast and a modern sensibility.
… It's sort of Beauty and the Beast, only this being WB, it's actually
Beauty and
the Beauty. And yes, that's just as dull as it sounds.
The Los Angeles Times says:
the opening minutes, as the half-seen jungle king makes
his first escape from urban captivity, are fantastically well executed
and gripping as, for that matter, are all the action sequences … does not
have any elephants, or much humor, or a sense of the absurdity of its premise.
… Notwithstanding that he was already famous in underwear-model-watching
circles, it is entirely likely that Fimmel will be merely the latest in
a long string of actors — Lara, Elmo Lincoln, Jock Mahoney, Lex Barker,
Gordon Scott, Mike Henry, Miles O'Keefe, Ron Ely and Weissmuller, among,
I am afraid to say, others — who will eventually be remembered only because
they once played Tarzan. … Fimmel is not half bad. He holds the screen
at least as well as Callies, who looks stunned a lot of the time. … It's
almost too obvious that Tarzan would be made, as he will be here, a crime
fighter. …

WB's 'Tarzan' is all beefcake and little beef

When Travis Fimmel is shirtless, as he so often is in
the title role of the WB's new Sunday night series "Tarzan," it should
be clear to one and all that this is a man with muscles to spare.
Less certain is whether the Australian-born model, whose Calvin
Klein underwear billboard is said to have caused traffic tie-ups in the
heart of London, is strong enough in his screen debut to carry a prime-time
drama on his broad shoulders. His body is impressive. His body of work,
as yet, is not. The WB's answer to those who would doubt Fimmel --
presumably echoing the many teenage girls (and no doubt a few swooning
boys) who already have his photo pasted up in their lockers -- is: Who
cares! He's hot! Those more discerning who are curious enough to tune in
to the series debut at 8 p.m. Sunday on WGN-Channel 9 look to be somewhat
less impressed. Camera-friendly or not, Mr. Fab Abs will need more
backing than he gets initially. To the extent "Tarzan" succeeds, like its
star, it's on style, not substance. The model for this modern New York
City-set update of the old Edgar Rice Burroughs creation would seem to
be "Smallville," the WB's teen-friendly update of the old Superman
legend. But Tom Welling, who gets to play the young man of steel in that
series, gets ample support from a cast of solid pros. Fimmel gets little
such boost. Admittedly, the role of Tarzan should not have to be
terribly demanding in this version set in a dark and shadowy Manhattan,
where, as the survivor of the African plane crash that killed his family,
the feral beefcake lives under the thumb of his menacing magnate uncle.
There are acrobatics, some flexing, a bit of grunting, a few lines and
the occasional need to toss back a tousled mane of hair. That's about
it, and all there is to it. But that works only if others must do the heavy
lifting dramatically. Bring in an Annette O'Toole, a John Schneider and
a John Glover and maybe Fimmel's "Tarzan" wouldn't seem so dreary and empty,
all atmosphere and no gas. About all that's offered to buck up the Aussie
farmboy hunk is former "X-Files" supporting player Mitch Pileggi as Tarzan's
uncle, though Lucy Lawless of "Xena: Warrior Princess" (said to make an
appearance in the pilot but absent from the version available to critics)
is set to have a supporting role as his aunt. It does not help that
this Tarzan's Jane (Sarah Wayne Callies), a New York cop, isn't nearly
as pretty as the lovestruck superhuman jungle boy who manages to sniff
her out whether she is uptown, downtown, in Central Park or the surrounding
boroughs. These two just don't spark. Looking at each other, their eyes
are as dull as the characters, which may help explain why the series' original
title of "Tarzan and Jane" was shortened to just "Tarzan." Callies is just
not much of a presence, despite having more scenes Sunday than Fimmel.
Because there is little to distract you if you are not inclined to melt
at the mere sight of Fimmel, your mind is apt to wander and this is where
things unravel. Never mind that this Tarzan seems capable of defying the
laws of physics, continually cheats death and routinely overpowers and
overtakes packs of armed men whose sole responsibility is to subdue him.
This is a fantasy show. You still have to wonder how foul someone who dines
on alley scraps with wild dogs smells, and how someone who had spent so
much time alone in the jungle would intuit that certain chemicals are flammable.
But then this is the kind of show in which a bad guy -- a Travis Bickle
type who murders homeless people in a gruesome way -- leaves clues as to
his identity in anagrams. Anagrams! With "Tarzan" relying on writing
like that, no wonder Fimmel is willing to give up the shirt off his back
to distract viewers. |

This thrilling contemporary take transforms
the classic Tarzan tale into a rapid-fire adventure, an intriguing mystery
and, most of all, a fiery love story. Strong-willed NYPD detective Jane
Porter's perfectly ordered life turns upside down when a routine case unexpectedly
leads her to primal and passionate Tarzan, now loose in the urban jungles

Captured by his billionaire uncle, Richard Clayton
(Mitch Pileggi, The X-Files), the CEO of powerful Greystoke Industries,
Tarzan is returned, against his will, to his family's home in New York
City. Within the Clayton family, Tarzan's return has unleashed rivalries
that have festered for decades. His uncle Richard is bitterly estranged
from his younger sister Kathleen Clayton (Lucy Lawless, The Ugly Americans,
Xena, Warrior Princess) the witty, sardonic and beautiful newspaper publisher
who is Tarzan's aunt. While Richard believes that his desire to rehabilitate
Tarzan and make him a real member of society is in Tarzan's own best interest,
Kathleen believes that what Tarzan really needs is their help and support
as he finds his own way in this strange new world. Now that their nephew
has returned from the dead as Tarzan, Richard and Kathleen have squared
off in a new battle. While they are both driven by love - for Tarzan and
for the family - they also know that whoever controls Tarzan, controls
Greystoke Industries as well. Resisting captivity, Tarzan escapes into
the concrete jungle of New York City where he encounters the strong-willed
NYPD detective Jane Porter (stage actress Sarah Wayne Callies). Jane's
perfectly ordered life is turned upside-down by her attraction to Tarzan
and his dangerous yet profoundly untainted morality.
Detective Michael Foster (Johnny Messner, Tears of
the Sun), Jane is left to choose between reason and instinct, civilization
and pure humanity, her head and her heart. While the rivalry between
Tarzan and Michael quickly becomes explosive, the sudden shift in Jane's
world also affects her partner Sam Sullivan (Miguel A. Núñez,
Jr., Scooby Doo). Though he appears brash and irreverent, Sam
is a dedicated cop, and he is stunned by Jane's reckless behavior
and her obsession with this mysterious fugitive.
Now that Tarzan is a part of her life, Jane sees everything
differently, especially her work with the police force. Crimes of
violence, greed and revenge suddenly take on a deeper and more disturbing
meaning, and she is more troubled than ever before by what she sees. Looking
at society from Tarzan's perspective, Jane begins to wonder
what it really means to be "civilized."
Drawn together from different worlds, Tarzan and Jane
share passions that are only heightened by the gulf between them.
Tarzan's feelings for Jane now keep him in New York, but his view of the
world is unchanged. Confronted with a city that exists in shades of gray,
Tarzan still sees everything in black and white. When he comes across an
innocent person in trouble, he reacts swiftly and sometimes brutally, guided
by the sense of justice that is the core of his being. Driven by his devotion
to Jane and his unwavering sense of right and wrong, Tarzan makes his way
through New York City, using instinct, his unique physical abilities and
wits sharpened by years in the jungle. Tarzan is a modern day hero - an
extraordinary man living in the real and all-too-brutal modern world.

Tarzan risks exposure when he assists Jane with a police
case, helping her find a group of men responsible for attacking a young
woman in Central Park. When Jane's fiance Michael discovers that Tarzan
is alive, he makes a deal with Richard Clayton, offering to help capture

Clear! Fans of the WB's "Tarzan" are trying to resuscitate
the show. After last week's column announcing the possible cancellation
of this freshman drama, I was inundated by e-mails from fans, prompting
this special edition of TV Turn-Ons to inform readers about the campaign
to save this modern-day retelling of a classic tale. A group called
Team Tarzan is bombarding the WB with messages to save their show. Stuffed
animals, plants and fruit baskets have been sent to WB officials, according
to e-mails and Web sites. This strategy has been known to work. The WB's
"Roswell" was saved from the cutting-room floor after fans sent thousands
of Tabasco sauce bottles to the network, showing officials there the show's
loyal fan base. Although it was canceled the next year, "Roswell" was picked
up by UPN for another season. "Tarzan," which aired at 9 p.m. Sunday, took
the title character, played by Travis Fimmel, out of the jungle and placed
him in New York City.
Tarzan found his new environment hostile and confusing,
but there was one thing keeping him from returning to the jungle forever
-- Jane, a New York detective played by Sarah Wayne Callies, who also finds
herself drawn to this innocent yet savage being. "Tarzan" also marked the
return of Lucy Lawless and Mitch Pileggi to the small screen. Lawless,
who was last seen on TV as the title character in "Xena, Warrior Princess,"
played Tarzan's aunt, Kathleen Clayton. Pileggi, formerly of "The X-Files,"
played Richard Clayton, who rescued Tarzan from the jungle only to imprison
him in his home in order to civilize the wild beast that was his nephew.

Ron Ely Series (1966-1968)
One of the best features of the series as a whole is the excellent
selection and acting ability of the guest stars. For this reason I have
included the names of the featured guest stars with every episode. The
main weaknesses of the series are inconsistent story lines, overuse of
the young boy Jai character, and too little interaction with the world
of animals.

Animated Series (1976-1980)
Tarzan, Lord Of The Jungle was a half hour show that premiered on September
11, 1976 and ran 1976-1977. In 1977, Filmation brought in Batman
and coupled it with Tarzan, as The Batman/Tarzan Adventure Hour, which
mixed new Batman cartoons with new Tarzan cartoons (and Tarzan reruns).
The third season changed it again by keeping Batman and calling it Tarzan
And The Super 7.

THE JACK BENNY SHOW TARZAN SKIT
with Guest Star Carol Burnett -
A transcription of the skit featured in
the second half of the show.
JACK: Now Carol, there was one more thing I wanted to ask you... O yes...
would you like to have dinner with me tonight.
CAROL: O Jack, I’d love to but I’m sorry... I’m busy... I wish you’d
asked me last night. I didn’t have a thing to do so I just sat in my hotel
room and watched television. I saw the late, late show.
JACK: Oh, The Tarzan show
CAROL: Yes
JACK: Oh Wasn’t it wonderful. I watched it.
CAROL: Did you see it?
JACK: I always watch it.
CAROL: You know I’m really embarrassed to say this but I do the silliest
thing when I watch pictures.
JACK: Like what for instance?
CAROL: Well, I always imagine myself to be the beautiful leading lady
JACK: Funny thing .. everybody does that. I do that too, you know,
when I watch. CAROL: You imagine yourself to be the beautiful leading lady?
JACK: Only if she gets laughs. No... but I... but I.. I... I... I picture
myself as the leading man. But I thought that Tarzan picture was just great...
didn’t you?
CAROL: You remember that first scene when the safari was just breaking
camp.
DISSOLVE TO SAFARI BREAKING CAMP IN JUNGLE.
JANE’S FATHER (PROFESSOR PORTER?): Well, as soon as we get the rest
of these things on the jeep we may as well get started.
JANE’S MOTHER: It’ll be so good getting back to London again. Come
on Jane. Hurry up.
JANE: Mother. I’m not going to London
FATHER: What!?
JANE: That’s right. I’ve decided to stay here. I’ve fallen in love.
MOTHER: Here? In the jungle?
JANE: I’ve met the most wonderful....
TARZAN YELL IN DISTANCE. A WELL BUILT HUNK IN LEOPARD SKIN (OVER THE
SHOULDER VERSION) APPEARS IN THE TREES
FATHER: (Taken aback) Good gracious! What was that?
JANE: That’s him... the man I love. Tarzan.
TARZAN SWINGS INTO THE CLEARING ON A VINE, AND STANDS IN FULL HUNKINESS
- ARMS AKIMBO.
FATHER: Jane you’ve got to be serious.
MOTHER: You’re staying here in the jungle with this brute.
JANE: I’ve made up my mind.
FATHER: I won’t listen to this nonsense. You are going back to London
with us.
JANE: No I’m not! I’m not! I’m not going back to London.
JANE WALKS TO EDGE OF CLEARING AND STANDS STARING AT THE JUNGLE WITH
HER BACK TO THE AUDIENCE.
CAROL DOES VOICE OVER: As I sat there watching the television set, I
imagined that I was the beautiful, vivacious Jane who was determined to
stay in the jungle with her new found love.
FATHER: Jane! We’re waiting.
JANE TURNS AROUND AND WE SEE THAT SHE IS NOW PLAYED BY CAROL.
JANE: I don’t care if you’re waiting or not. I’m staying right here
in the jungle... with him.
JANE LEAPS ONTO TARZAN WITH LEGS AROUND HIS WAIST AND HANGING ON TO
HIS MIGHTY BICEPS AS HE SWINGS HER BACK AND FORTH. BOTH MILK THE SCENE
WITH GOOFY GRINS.
FATHER: Jane! What can you two find in common?
JANE: Everything. We have fun together, don’t we sweetheart. Come.
Let’s show daddy the game we play.
TARZAN PICKS UP A HUGE BOULDER AND TOSSES IT FOR JANE TO CATCH. SHE
IS KNOCKED BACK ONTO HER BOTTOM.
JANE: Umgawa...ugh...
FATHER: Jane you are not staying here.
JANE: I am.
FATHER: You are not!
JANE: I am too.
FATHER: No you are not!
JANE: I - AM - TOO!
JACK DOES VOICE OVER DURING THE ARGUMENT: I was hoping she would win
the argument because as I sat there watching my television set, I imagined
that I was Tarzan.
CUT BACK TO TARZAN WHO IS NOW PLAYED BY JACK. HE IS WEARING A BAGGY
BODY SUIT, COMPLETE WITH LUMPY BULGING MUSCLES, UNDER THE LEOPARD SKIN.
HE IS ALSO ADORNED WITH A BLACK WIG, WRIST AMULETS, FEATHERS, AND RIBBON
TIED SANDALS.
FATHER: Jane how can you stay here in the jungle with this big uneducated
beast? He can’t even speak.
JANE: Father, when I first met him he was nothing but a gorgeous hunk
of ignorant. But I’ve been teaching him. Sweetheart, show father what I’ve
taught you.
THEY EMBRACE AND LOOK INTO EACH OTHER’S EYES EXPECTANTLY
JACK: Me Jane. You Tarzan.
JANE: No, uh no darling. Me Jane. You Tarzan. Understand?
JACK: (Tarzan speaks haltingly with big grin and nodding): Un..der...stand.
FATHER: Surely you can’t be in love... with.. this!?
JANE: With arms around Tarzan’s mighty chest): O but father, I am.
All my life I’ve wanted a man who could CRUSH me in his arms. Look at him
so strong. This morning he tore a crocodile in half -- longways! Look at
those muscles.
FATHER: Well. All right, daughter. You’ve made your decision. But remember
that this is purely a physical attraction. Years will change all this.
JANE: I don’t care. I’m staying.
FATHER: (To mother):We might as well go. (To Jane): Goodbye Jane.
TARZAN: Goodbye.
JANE: No. Me Jane. You Tarzan.
MOTHER: Jane, are you sure you want to do this thing
JANE: Of course I am mother. I’m staying here in the jungle with Tarzan
of the Apes.
TARZAN AND JANE WALK OFF INTO JUNGLE ARM IN ARM.
FATHER: (Resigned and perplexed): Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.
MOTHER: You very well may.
FADE OUT SCENE OPENS ON MONKEYS SWINGING IN JUNGLE. TITLE CAPTION: “20
YEARS LATER” JANE IN JUNGLE OUTFIT, STAGGERS INTO THE CLEARING UNDER A
LOAD OF JUNGLE GATHERINGS TO A HUGE COOKING POT WHICH IS SURROUNDED BY
STONE FURNITURE. SHE DUMPS THE INGREDIENTS INTO THE STEW IN THE POT, STIRS
IT WITH A LARGE PADDLE, TASTES THE STEW AND SPITS IT OUT.
JANE: OooYeaaaugh. (She spits out the stew and straightens her long
Jungle Girl wig) There, that’s much better. I shoulda listened to my father.
Twenty years in the same stinking jungle, wearin’ the same rotten clothes,
with the same lousy furniture. I’m sick of this soup too. It’s nothing
but grass and leaves and weeds and...
CUT TO SQUAWKING PARROT IN A TREE. JANE NOTICES THE BIRD, GETS AN IDEA,
SNEAKS OVER TO GRAB A SLEDGEHAMMER AND CLIMBS UP AFTER IT. SHE CLOBBERS
THE PARROT AND THROWS IT ACROSS THE CLEARING INTO THE COOKING POT. SHE
GRABS A VINE AND SWINGS BACK DOWN INTO THE CLEARING. THE BIRD STARTS TO
SQUAWK IN THE POT SO SHE GRABS THE PADDLE AND HITS IT AGAIN.
JANE: I thought you were dead. Well I guess I’d better straighten things
up around here.
JANE GRABS A HUGE GRASS BROOM AND PALM LEAF AND SWEEPS UP THE CLEARING.
UNCERTAIN AS TO WHERE TO PUT THE SWEEPINGS, SHE DUMPS THEM INTO THE STEW
POT.
JANE: That’ll give it a little body. Ahh. Twenty years married to Tarzan.
My father was right when he said it was just a physical attraction. Boy
has he changed.
A NOW-SKINNY TARZAN WITH MUSCLES GONE AND BODY SUIT SAGGING, STAGGERS
INTO SIGHT IN THE TREES. HE TAPS HIS SUNKEN CHEST AND ATTEMPTS A FEEBLE,
GARGLED APE CRY.
JANE: (Gives a powerful Weissmuller Tarzan cry): AAAuuuuugggghhaaaa
yourself and get on down here.
TARZAN GINGERLY REACHES FOR TWO VINES AND SITS. HE THEN DESCENDS INTO
THE CLEARING ON A KIDDIE-STYLE SWING SEAT SUSPENDED BY VINES.
JANE: (Walking over to talk to Tarzan still sitting on swing seat):
It’s hard to believe THAT’S king of the jungle. TARZAN: (Standing up and
hanging the swing on the underbrush): Hey. What we got for dinner Tarzan.
JANE: If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times -- Me Jane.
You Tarzan!
LONG JACK BENNY PAUSE AND LOOK
TARZAN: All right. What’s for dinner?
JANE: Guess.
TARZAN: Elephants trunks stuffed with alligator gizzards?
JANE: An elephant’s trunk stuffed with alligator gizzards? You think
every day’s Sunday? Guess again.
TARZAN: Hippopotamus fried in Gazelle fat?
JANE: Neeeooh.
THE PARROT IN THE POT STARTS TO SQUAWK AGAIN. JANE RUNS OVER TO HIT
IT WITH A STONE.
JANE: Shut up. He’s supposed to guess.
TARZAN: I know. Cockatoo soufflé.
JANE: All right. All right. Sit down at the table.
TARZAN: Hey, what’s the matter with us. We don’t have fun no more.
We don’t enjoy being together no more. We don’t play any more. We don’t
play games. We don’t do nothin’.
JANE: All right. All right. You wanna play, we’ll play.
JANE PICKS UP HUGE BOULDER AND THROWS IT AT TARZAM WHO IS KNOCKED INTO
THE UNDERBRUSH. LONG SHOT OF TARZAN LYING HELPLESS UNDER THE ROCK. HE RISES
AND STAGGERS BACK INTO THE CLEARING.
TARZAN: Game over.
JANE: All right. Dinner’s over. Sit down.
TARZAN: I forgot to tell you. I invite three friends. Here they come
now.
THREE HUGE GORILLAS WADDLE IN AND SIT DOWN ON THE STONE FURNITURE, WAITING
TO BE FED.
JANE: O no. Not again!
JANE RACES BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE GUESTS AND THE COOKING POT, UNABLE
TO KEEP UP TO THEIR APPETITES. FINALLY SHE COLLAPSES, EXHAUSTED, ON THE
STONE TABLE. JACK RISES FROM THE TABLE.
TARZAN: Tarzan now play music for friends.
TARZAN PICKS UP CRUDE STONEAGE-STYLE VIOLIN AND GOES INTO “LOVE IN BLOOM”.
THE GORILLAS LEAVE IN DISGUST WITH HANDS ON THEIR EARS. MANY STOCK SHOTS
OF MONKEYS AND JUNGLE ANIMALS SHOW THEM ALL STAMPEDING AWAY IN PANIC. TARZAN
CARRIES ON -- OBLIVIOUS. JANE STARTS PACKING A SUITCASE WITH STONE UTENSILS.
TARZAN: Where are you going.
JANE: I’m leaving. And I’m taking the furniture with me.
TARZAN: Well you can leave if you want to. Tarzan has to stay in jungle
and carry on tradition. And Tarzan not alone. Tarzan have son.
CHUBBY YOUNG ACTOR WHO PLAYS DON WILSON’S SON HARLOW IN THE SERIES MAKES
AN ENTRANCE WEARING A CHARLES ATLAS LEOPARD SKIN. HE POUNDS HIS CHEST AND
GIVES A TARZAN YELL.
BOY: Daddy. Where is mommy going?
TARZAN: Mommy going on a nice trip.
JANE: STRIP!
JANE JUMPS ONTO TABLE AND GOES INTO A BUMP AND GRIND TO AN ORCHESTRA
RENDITION OF “THE STRIPPER.” FADE OUT WITH TARZAN PLEADING WITH GYRATING
JANE.
CURTAIN CALL EXTRO FEATURES JACK AND CAROL IN JUNGLE COSTUME. JACK “POUNDS”
HIS CHEST AND GIVES HIS FEEBLE TARZAN CRY.
CAROL: Tarzan say - He see you soon.
