Georgia Trip Reports
Georgia is full of hiking opportunities, but we've only scratched its surface. In March of 2008, I did several short dayhikes to waterfalls in the Chattahoochee National Forest, near Helen.    (Photos)     In September, 2013 I returned to the area and hiked the Appalachian Trail from Unicoi Gap to Tray Mountain    (Photos)     In March of 2006, we finally backpacked the Cumberland Island National Seashore, a barrier island off the Georgia coast.     Photos     In February of 2002, we dayhiked on the Bartram Trail to the summit of Rabun Bald. In June of 2005, a business trip took me to southwest Georgia, giving me the opportunity to hike in Providence Canyon. That fall, I returned to the Georgia mountains for a visit to Toccoa Falls and a hike to Blood Mountain. In January of 2007, Myron, Dorcas, Bob, and I ran into some interesting locals on a backpacking trip along the Chattooga River. In April, 2010 we backpacked a 56-mile stretch of the Bartram Trail from the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina to Russell Bridge over the Chattooga River.     (Photos) Additional trip reports from the Chattooga River area can be found on the South Carolina page. In July of 2010, I spent 3 days backpacking with Jimmy along The Jacks River in the Cohutta Wilderness.     (Photos).      In May of 2012, I finally hiked at Amiacola Falls State Park.     (Photos). In July, 20112 we visited Cleveland, TN, and I took advantage of the opportunity to hike to Lula Lake and Lula Falls, on Lookout Mountain, above Chattanooga.     (Photos). In February, 2014 I joined Darrin for a weekend at The Hike Inn, near Amiacola Falls State Park. We also visited several waterfalls, and I dayhiked solo one morning to Springer Mountain.     (Photos). My April, 2014 car camping and hiking trip in the Tallulah River headwaters, plus a dayhike with Brenda in Tallulah Gorge State Park.     (Photos). In January, 2015 I returned with Darrin to The Len Foote Hike Inn in Amiacola Falls State Park. We did 3 hikes to 6 waterfalls that weekend including 4 waterfalls on Falls Creek in the Wildcat Tract of Dawson Forest, Cochrans Falls, and Bearden Falls.     (Photos).
In June, 2015 I visited the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta: Georgia Aquarium photos. In October, 2016 Team Waterfall explored Three Forks, where Overflow Creek, Big Creek, and Holcomb Creek join to form the West Fork of the Chattooga River.     (Photos). Next was a December, 2016 trip in northeast Georgia. First, Jennifer and I hiked to "Holy Shit", the first waterfall on Big Creek downstream from highway 28. Then we joined Spencer, Stephanie, Kyle, Angelina, and Tray for a visit to Glade Falls. Jennifer, Tray, and I scrambled and bushwhacked to the base, while everyone else rappelled it. After that, we bushwhacked up the side of a mountain, crossed a swamp, and navigated a bewildering series of overgrown logging roads to reach Hanging Rock. We continued on to Cook Mountain, where we found another great viewpoint and an amazing cave. Photos. In August, 2017 long weekend in northeast Georgia, including a hike with Scott and Pamela to a waterfall on Law Ground Creek, a hike Big Thunder - a waterfall inside a slot canyon on Clear Creek, and a hike up Rabun Bald for the solar eclipse.     (Photos) |
