New York Trip Reports

New York Photos

Many years ago, a business trip gave me the opportunity to do my first (and so far, only) real hike in New York. I chose a nice hike to Slide Mountain in the Catskills. Highlights of the hike included some nice views and my first ever Porcupine sighting. Unfortunately, that trip was years before I started doing trip reports and taking photos. Since then, I've visited New York City twice. In April, 2005 a one-day work trip left me with a couple of hours to walk around Manhattan. In April of 2009, Christy made her first visit to Manhattan.

In October, 2017 Christy, the dogs and I took a trip to Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Upstate New York. After starting in Ohio, we drove to Buffalo and visited Niagara Falls.    (Photos) . The next day we hiked to waterfalls and views in Letchworth State Park.    (Photos) . We camped at Buttermilk Falls State Park near Ithaca that night. The next morning we did the spectacular hike through the gorge at Watkins Glen State Park.    (Photos) .

In early October, 2022, a car camping trip with Christy to Maine and the Adirondacks turned into a trip with Christy to Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan, before morphing into a backpacking trip with Larry to the Adirondacks. After two failed attempts, I finally got to hike in some of the most rugged mountains in the world. We spent the first afternoon and the next morning hiking in to Marcy Dam, Avalanche Pass, Avalanche Lake, and Lake Colden.    (Photos) . The afternoon of the second day, we hiked up Mount Colden from our campsite.    (Photos) . On Sunday we hiked up the Opalescent River to Lake Tear of the Clouds before descending to Panther Gorge to camp. On Monday we hiked down to Upper Ausable Lake, crossed the Ausable River on a bridge, climbed the Elevator Shaft, hiked over Mount Colvin, and descended to a campsite on Gill Brook.     (Photos) . The next morning we packed up and hiked to the Fishhawk Cliffs and Indian Head for spectacular views of Lower Ausable Lake and the Sawteeth. From there we descended to the lake. We spent the afternoon enjoying the lake and the lower part of the Scenic Trail.      (Photos) . That afternoon we hiked to Rainbow Falls, the Lost Lookout, and Beaver Meadow Falls. We spent our last night at a campsite on Wedge Brook before hiking out the following day.     (Photos) .
