=/\=OPENING=/\=

Welcome to the July 2003 Regular Newsletter! The
special editions a few weeks ago pretty much covered
everything that needed to be covered so this one will
be pretty short. It's still very cool though. Read
on to find out about an ancient document discovered
that contains posts from original sunfire characters
from three years ago. You may even recognize some of
them!

* * * * * * * * * *

=/\=NEWSBITS=/\=

- USS Washington hits 2500 posts on July 8, written
by Lt. Chameleon Circuit.  Second IDF sim to reach
that incredible number.

- Correction to the Announcement of the DD of DRF
Division:  James Miroth, not James Britanicus, is now
the DD.  Britanicus remains a Captain.  Miroth is
promoted Rear-Admiral.

- The Excalibur hit it's 2700th post in June.

- Ancient Sunfire documents, once thought lost
forever, surface recently. [See article below for
details.]

=/\=ANCIENT SUNFIRE DOCUMENTS DISCOVERED=/\=

Just recently our own Admiral West stumbled upon
ancient scrolls from three years ago containing the
first 25 posts from the USS Sunfire NCC-3935, the ship
that started it all! The original sunfire archives
were destroyed and no one from the original crew would
have ever dreamed of seeing the posts again. But now
we know that a little bit of persistence pays off! We
sat down briefly with the Admiral to ask him about how
he came upon this miraculous find.

INTERVIEWER: Admiral, our time here is short. Tell
us about the long search for these old documents and
how you discovered them.

ADMIRAL WEST: Well, ever since the original archives
were destroyed, I have been searching around the net
trying to find old members of the crew to see if they
had saved anything from the time. For months and
months and months I had no luck. But one day last
week I e-mailed an old crewman Lieutenant Junior
Grade(ret) Sean Lynch, the Assistant Science Officer
under the Lieutenant Robert Seldon. He said he had
the first twenty something posts saved and sent them
right over to me.

INTERVIEWER: Your search has finally payed off I see.
I'm delighted.

ADMIRAL WEST: I will also keep looking for more.
Someone out there must have saved other stuff.

INTERVIEWER: I hope you find the jackpot one day. I
understand that you have brought a few posts from the
ancient scrolls that you would like to share with us
all.

ADMIRAL WEST: Yes, I want to share with everyone Post
#1, written by Commodore Robbie (this post started it
all, without this post the Sunfire would have never
blasted off and IDF would not exist today), and I also
want to share my first post ever, as well as the first
ever posts of Admiral Star and Vice Admiral(ret)
Seldon.

ON: (bridge) it is 14 hrs later. The surveying is
almost complete. After an almost uneventful day,
suddenly....

:: a small alarm goes off in the Tactical station of
the bridge::

Lt. Mivancher: Commodore, there are three vessels on
long range sensors.....they’re on an intercept course.

Commodore: What are the configurations of the ships,
Lt?

Mivancher: unknown sir....... at their present rate of
speed they should be here in 5 hrs.....<silence>....
sir, what should we do?

Commodore: Maintain course and speed and continue
surveying, we are almost through, watch those ships
for me Mr. Mivancher. When they are in visual range
contact me.....I will be in my ready room ::The
Commodore exits and proceeds to his ready room::

(still on the bridge)
Commander West: Mr. Hawke, you have the bridge. I’m
going down to engineering for a while.

Mr. Hawke: Aye sir

Commander: :: Gets up and goes to the turbo lift, gets
in:: Engineering.

(Engineering)::Commander is talking to chief
engineer::

Commander: There are 3 unidentified ships on an
intercept course, if it all comes down to a conflict
we will need full warp power to get out of here.

Lt. Commander Dwarf: The plasma manifolds are still
giving us trouble, right now I can give you warp 6,
give me 2 or 3 more hours and I can probably give you
warp 9.

Commander: Very good. I’m counting on you. ::turns
and exits::

(Bridge..... a little while later)
::Commander walks on to the bridge::

Mivancher: Commander the ships just entered visual
range.

Commander: Thank you, Lt. =/\= Captain to the

::The Commodore comes onto the bridge:: " what is it
Commander?"

Commander: sir, the ships are in visual range

::a brief pause follows::

Commodore: On screen.

::Everyone on the bridge looks toward the view screen.
No one knows what will appear. Everyone holds their
breath ...::

OFF: What a place to leave off. The suspense of what
will be on the view screen is killing me. Whoever
replies to this better have a good follow up. Start

Subj: [usssunfire] Part #7
Date: 2/16/00 9:45:01 PM Central Standard Time
From:
Rigel@w... (Jacob Holloway)

OFF: Well, here goes... Oh, I believe thoughts are
expressed (in parenthesis)

ON:
Lt. Seldon: ::walks over to primary science station
and quickly begins going through all the scanning
data:: Yes, they do appear to be made entirely of
biomatter. I can't imagine how a vessel like that
though
can be warp capable.

Lt. Mivanchar: But they obviously are. And right now
they are heading for us at warp 7.1

Capt. Robertson: =/\=Lt. Cmdr. Dwarf, what’s our
present best speed?=/\=

Lt. Cmdr. Dwarf: =/\=You have all speeds available
through Warp 6.3. I'll have up to warp 9 available in
ninety minutes =/\=

Lt. Seldon: At present speed they will intercept us
in... one hour.

Capt. Robertson: What are their intentions though?

Cmdr. West: We have no indication that they are
hostile. However, we have no guarantees they are
benevolent either. And there is nothing we can do to
prevent an encounter.

Lt. Mivanchar: Captain, if this comes to blows Star
Fleet weapons have not historically faired well
against the few bioships we've encountered. We'll be
at a serious disadvantage.

Capt. Robertson: Agreed. We'll need to take
precautions just in case. Lt. Seldon, work with Lt.
Cmdr. Star in Medical and your science team to try and
come up with some countermeasures against them, We
don't have
much time.

Lt. Seldon: Aye Sir. ::head to turbo lift::
=/\=Seldon to Lt. Cmdr. Star. Charlie, we have work.
Meet me in Science Lab 1=/\= (to turbo lift) Science
Lab 1.

OFF: I can't think of anything interesting to write
here. I hope that you either liked my addition or can
do something to improve upon it.

INTERVIEWER: Wow, those posts really are stunning to
read. They marked the first mission of a legendary
vessel. It's cool to see how much you guys' posting
style has changed as well.

ADMIRAL WEST: Yes, it is really cool. ::looks at
watch:: Well, it's time for me to get back to work.

INTERVIEWER: Thank you, Admiral, for sitting down
with us and sharing these ancient relics of simming!

USS George W. Bush

The George W. Bush headed out to the far distant
system of Dinlo. Soon afterward the existence of a
Romulan Warbird was made known to the Bush. Later, The
away team on the planet was captured, along with the
team from the Warbird. They were forced to fight each
other in an arena, for their lives, under the amusing
eyes of a Q. After sometime, it was discovered that Q
was protecting something on the 6th planet, but left
before any more details could be uncovered. Before the
crew of the Bush could go and investigate, the Warbird
opened fire on the Federation Starship. With the help
of a traitor on the Bush, the Romulans were able
to fight against the Bush's defenses and cripple the
ship. They soon boarded, and began taking prisoners.
It was at this time that the Bush's CEO was taken by
the Romulans to be tortured until he would give the
information about a metaphysic cloaking
technology, which would allow vessels to pass through
other objects, including starships by changing the
state of matter. The Romulan forces were headed by
Sela Yar, acting for her own intensions not her
governments. Her second in command changed loyalties,
and helped the crew of the Bush fight off Sela's
forces. A distress call was sent and both Romulan and
Federation aide responded. The Bush is now en route to
the nearest Starbase, via a towing ship, to undergo
repairs and crew replacements.

USS Excaliber

The Excalibur heads to Xenex for the Wedding of Lt.
(jg) Calhoun and Lt. Wright.  Well, things aren't as
easy as that.  Conspiracy and murder are the norm of
this mission. With twists of humor.  We meet a new
race called the Cardboardians, who were created by Q.
The problem with that is that the Cardboardians are
more powerful then Q had planned and are running amok.
Lt. Cmdr. Dusty Redroi gets new friend in the
Cardboardians a dog like being called BOO also Mr.
Redroi seems to aquire the powers of the
Cardboardians.  Things twist and turn back to the
wedding were an assassin kills Lt. Wright.  So the
crew of the Excalibur have to help Q with the
Cardboardians and find who killed Lt. Wright....

The Minerva has been docked at Earth
Station McKinley for a while undergoing a scheduled
refit.  While she's there, the crew has been on shore
leave.  Captain Krol, Lieutenant D'erak, and Ensign
Hudson all go back up to the ship independently and
are stunned from behind.
     A few minutes later, a Romulan Valdore-class
Warbird, a Klingon Vorcha-class Attack Cruiser, and a
Ferengi D'Kora-class Marauder decloak and attack Earth
Station McKinley, destroying it and, presumably, the
Minerva before anyone has time to react.
The remaining crew of the Minerva are given the
U.S.S. Leviathan to track down the ships, which have
been linked with an Anarchist Terrorist Syndicate that
attacked the Minerva a few missions ago, nearly
destroying her and killing a lot of the crew.
Unbenknownst to the crew, the Minerva is intact,
having been put into warp at the last possible instant
before the station exploded, and Krol, D'erak, and
Hudson are in the custody of the terrorists, who call
themselves the Governmental Abolition Society, as they
have stolen the Minerva...

Starbase 10

The Romulan Mining Conference on SB10 has been moved
to Delegation
HQ on Earth.
Meanwhile, in the atmosphere of a little known planet
near SB10
called Valdera II, there has been leakage of Gamma and
Theta
radiation, which will soon effect the whole planet.
Starfleet is
sending several ships from other areas of space, but
as SB10 is
closest, and will be likely to send people out first,
we will be
heading the rescue mission. There is no known cause of
the sudden
appearance of radiation at this time, but Starfleet
suspects a
wormhole. SB10 and the other vessels sent are to
evacuate the planet
and find a place for them all, as obviously a whole
planet's worth
of people won't fit on one Starbase, find a way to rid
the
atmosphere of radiation, and get the Valdarans safely
back home once
the radiation has been cleared.

USS Horatio Nelson

The USS Horatio Nelson was tasked with escorting 5
colonization ships to the planet Halicon V.  They were
to RV at Star Base 31 and go from there.  While
waiting it was discovered that one of the ships had an
outbreak of a Bio-terrorism agent that at first
effected only the colonists but soon spread to the
human contingent.  This virus made it's way to the HN
but thanks to some hard reasearch by our medical staff
and an investigative team from Section 31 we were able
to stop and reverse the effects.  No crew were lost
but about 100 of the colonists died from thier
exposeur.  we finaly made it to Halicon V and began
the excercise of delivering the colonists when they
and we aere attacked by a previously unknown
underground creature.  During this confrontation Lt.
Commander J'Dem died.  It was learned that the "owner"
of the planet knew about the creatures and had hoped
that once a Star Fleet officer was killed we would
help him kill or dispalce the creatures.  It didn't
work out that way and the HN manged to have a
successful first contact.  Anyway, we survived the
ordeal and returned to Star base 13 where the DRF  has
it's head quaters and Brit got engaged to his long
time girlfriend, an NPC.

USS Conqueror

Trouble can come in small packages
After leaving starbase 12 we pass a un-inhibitive
planet. Our chief Science
officer (Yat’thra), runs a routine scans on it and
finds some unusual rock
compounds and asked if she came beam some up to study
and possibly eat since
she is a Horta. Our Captain K’lar teases her about it
being only a afternoon
snack for her but agrees that it would fine to beam
some of the rocks up for
study. Only thing is after some of the rocks are
beamed up the transporter tech
notices a small spark in the rocks on the padd but it
is quickly gone. After
scanning the areas and finding nothing he shrugs it
off and goes about his
duty. But now we have a brake out of crewman
reporting in that they where
originally in one part of the ship and suddenly with
out any reason ended up
some place else on the ship with having no idea how
they got there!
Then the ship starts acting up. Systems’ going haywire
and it is driving us
up the wall until we realize what had happened.

I will not be able to express how valuable this man is

you think can they really do that?  He posts when
things get slow.  He is an open and easy going officer
on the Excalibur and without him I don't think we
would have as many posts as we do.  Not that he posts
the most he keeps the story moving.  I am honored to
have him as my First Officer.  He is an MVP to the

Most Improved Poster: USS Horatio Nelson, Lt(jg) Dane

This (post #1110, nominated for best story post)  is a

Outstanding Simmer: USS Conqueror, Commander Kiara

For the 6 months of USS Conqueror's existance, she has
kept thing rolling, with great posts, and when things
get slow, she has given others things to post about,
and done joint posts with them. Also, she has readily
literally taken over for me, on more than one
occasion, when mundane problems have put me on quick
LOA. Were it not for her, The Conqueror probably
wouldn't have lasted past the first two months. She's
a great asset to any crew. And, most of our missions,
thus far, have been her ideas. What else does one need
to do, to earn the award for outstanding simmer?

=/\=INTERVIEW=/\=

This month’s guest is Lieutenant Fiona Starling, Chief
of Security of the USS Horatio Nelson.

Lt. Starling one the coveted MVP in April 2003.
First, we’ll start off with a brief mention of some
of Lt. Starling’s favorite Star Trek episodes:

Oooohh…so many great ones. I love so many! Well,
"Author, Author" from Voyager (because I want to be a
novelist), every single one of the Q episodes on any
and every series, "The Squire of Gothos" from TOS.
Ummm... I didn't get to watch much DS9 but if I had,
I'm sure there'd be a favorite there as well.

Interviewer: Good evening everyone. Tonight we have
the privilege of speaking to Lt. Fiona Starling of the
USS Horatio Nelson. Lt. Starling, we're glad to have
you with us.

Starling: It is a pleasure to be speaking with you.
:-)

Interviewer: So you have only been a part of the IDF
for a few months now, and have made a very memorable
impact on the Horatio Nelson already. How did you get
involved with simming?

Starling: Well, I have been doing online play-by-post
roleplaying for two years now. I usually play Dungeons
and Dragons style games, but when I was contacted by
Captain James Britanicus of the Horatio Nelson about
Star Trek PBEM, I was intrigued. I have been raised on
Star Trek and was overjoyed for the opportunity to
play it online with likeminded people. Simming is
quite possibly the most fun I've ever had on the
Internet. Beats MMORPGs by a mile.

Interviewer: That's great. We're fortunate to have you
with us. So what did you think of the Simm when you
first started?

Starling: I was struck at first by the great
characters. So many people have invested so much in
these characters. They all feel so real. That really
captured my attention. It's rare in the world of
fantasy roleplaying to find sane people who are able
to get into their characters minds without becoming
trapped there. I was thrilled to see that Trek gamers
for the most part are able to disconnect from the role
after suspending reality. I was also struck by the
immense friendliness of the other players. I was
greeted warmly, and in these few months have gone on
to become as good of friends with some of them as it
is possible to be online.

Interviewer: I am certain that many of them feel the
same way. So do you feel like you fit in well with the
crew now, after only a short time?

Starling: Definitely. I jumped in with both feet and
have never regretted it a moment. I feel that Fiona is
a valuable contribution to the crew, and that she (and
I) are well liked. There is certainly a liberating
sense of acceptance. I know that if I have any
problems with a post or with any thing any other
character does, or in the way Fiona is portrayed, that
I will be listened to. I also know that if I
accidentally miswrite another character, I will be
treated kindly. I couldn't have been more blessed than
to get introduced to ST simming by Britanicus and the
HN.

Interviewer: Yes, Brit is a very good Captain. So do
you have any favorite missions?

Starling: I haven't been aboard for many missions yet,
but I definitely enjoyed my first, a joint mission
with the GWB. We got sucked into a cosmic battle with
Q-like creatures and the end result was that some very
out-of-the-loop Bajorans became convinced that Brit
was their Savior. That was insanely fun. I also really
enjoyed a recent mission where martial law was
declared briefly and I got to go on the power trip of
being the Chief of Security on a martially controlled
vessel. That was very entertaining. I love all our
missions though. There is no mission that you can't
add a small subplot to to make a place for yourself.

Interviewer: That's a lesson all of us could stand to
remember. Other than making friends, what have you
gotten personally out of simming?

Starling: I get a great sense of vicarious purpose. I
love the feeling of being a fascinating, realistic
person doing fascinating, unreal things. Simming is
one of the bright spots of my day. I look forward to
checking my inbox for messages. It's wonderful to
really look forward to something.

Interviewer: I think a lot of us fell that way. Thanks
for putting it into words. So you recently won the
coveted MVP award for the fleet. What do you think it
takes to make a great player?

Starling: Wow. I don't know if I deserve to answer
that. But....  *smiling toothily* Since you asked... I
think it takes a good character first off, and the
right attitude to approaching that character. Just
coming up with the most powerful character you can get
away with really detracts from your fun and from
everyone else's. Stick to what you know. IF you can
convincingly convey the wisdom of years and struggle
of personality within, THEN play a joined Trill. If
you can't don't. Same goes for empaths, telepaths,
Klingons, and vanilla humans. A great player
demonstrates the backbone of Star Trek: that humanity
is frail and weak compared with what's "out there" but
there is no one so willing to overcome, or so
passionate about life, as the human race. If you're
not playing a human, make sure it isn't because
"humans are boring" but because you have been there
and have learned those basics. The best players are
playing real people who just happen to be in space in
the future. Beyond your great character, a great
player needs to know how to use the Golden Rule of
gaming: Make the other players look as you would wish
to look. If there is another character that could
conceivably do what you're about to play superhero and
jump in and do, write in their character as the hero
and yours as support. Your crewmates will love you for
it and return the favor. (Maybe even give you an MVP
award!)

Interviewer: That was a very well thought out answer.
We can all learn a lot from your words of wisdom.
Where do you see the fleet 6 months from now?

Starling: Well, I see ID Fleet overcoming these
struggles we're going through. There are alot of
passionate simmers here who aren't going to give up on
their ships. I know that just since I've been aboard
the HN has grown drastically, and there is no reason
every other ship can't do the same. Strong, committed
players are the backbone of any sim. Weeding out
glory-seekers can only make us stronger, and I see
that strength increasing as time passes. New ships are
not signs of success, nor is a huge Admiralty. The
surest signs of success are ships loyal to their
Captains and posting well-wrought posts with gusto,
That is my wish for IDF.

Interviewer: That's a worthy vision for this dedicated
Fleet. Well, Lieutenant Starling, we're about out of
time. Is there anything you'd like to add?

Starling: I would only add... Remember that this all
about the experiences. There are no winners and no
losers. Never let a temporary issue mar your pleasure
in the game.

Interviewer: Sound advice for all of us. Well, thanks
so much for your time. I think it's good for all of us
to reflect on why we like Simming, and why we like the
IDF. You've just given us a few more reasons to
consider. Thank you for joining us, Lt Starling.

Starling: You are so welcome, Interviewer. "We love
you dark continent, GOOD NIGHT!"
