Map of Kazakhstan
The journey that began our year in Kazakhstan was a significant one. Departing from LAX, we flew British Airways through London (where we had a brief layover) and Baku, Azerbaijan (where we did not leave the aircraft) to Almaty, Kazakhstan. In all, our in-air travel time was something on the order of 20 hours. In Almaty we found a hotel and stayed one night, as we were too late to catch a train to Karaganda that first day. Our train ride added an additional 20 hours of travel time (by the end of which I was feeling a bit claustrophobic). Finally, we arrived in our new home, Karaganda (for a map, see Where Is Kazakhstan).
At LAX Here we are waiting to begin our several-day, intercontinental travel experience.
Dave at Heathrow We had a short layover in London (staying in Heathrow) and then flew to Almaty via Baku, Azerbaijan.
Scott in Almaty We all felt about how Scott looks in this picture.
Dave, Chris and Bob (an alum). We stood around for a while waiting to get RR tickets and a room for the night.
The Vokzal (Train Station) One of Almaty's two train stations.
Chris and Scott by a Statue in Almaty They're eating shashlik (lamb kabob) from a bag!
The Gang at a Park We did a lot of walking this day, looking for our embassies so that we could register.
Bob on the Train to Karaganda We were all feeling a bit claustrophobic by the end of our travels.
Landscape with Camel Pretty self-explanitory.
Landscape Beautiful, isn't it? The terrain made me think of the southwest.
