Now we start to see some results. After about 10 minutes I have pretty much cleared all the dead and loose hair from Martin’s ear canal and the skin is finally exposed. I again brush out the hair on the underside of the ear flap and that surrounding the ear canal opening ensuring that no loose dirty hairs dropped during plucking are in the coat and that I have a good view of the ear flap which will be plucked next.

I proceed to pluck the ear flap in much the same manner as I did the ear canal. This time of course pull in the direction that the hair lies. It will generally be easier to grip than the ear canal hair as it will generally be less waxy and is longer. Limit yourself to fewer hairs per pull on the ear flap. While not as sensitive as the ear canal too many hairs at once will hurt the dog and if they hurt you will lose their co-operation. And believe me if the pupster doesn’t want to cooperate this cleaning simply will not happen.!

5-10 minutes of work yields this! About half the area of the underside of the ear flap will be plucked clean. This reduces how much broken hair gets into the ear canal and helps in air flow. Finally it also helps cool the ear flap which in turn helps to keep the ear canal marginally cooler. You’ll never notice that this hair is missing when you lower the ear flap, even if you are showing your dog.
