Gambels Quail
The Gambels Quail is another bird that prefers to run, rather than fly.
They will dart across the road in front of you, breaking into flight at the last
possible moment. In the springtime, it's common to see an entire family, 2 adults
and their many young, (8-10), dash in front of you, little legs just flying. LOL. This is the
quail people most often think of, since it's been seen or heard in so many
Western movies as you just heard it now.
Gila Monster
The Gila Monster is the largest lizard in the United States, weighing up
to two pounds and reaching a total length of twenty inches. They spend
about 98% of their time underground, making a sighting of them a rare
occurance. It's the only venomous lizard in the USA, one of only two
worldwide (It's closely related relative, the Mexican Beaded Lizard lives in
western Mexico). Yet it presents little danger to humans,
nearly all the bites in Arizona were preventable. Humans should never
attempt to handle this lizard, no matter how docile it may appear.
It is illegal to capture and keep this creature in Arizona. Yet years ago,
while working at the zoo, a soldier from the nearby base showed up with one.
Some man had caught one, and was at a roadside selling it! This soldier paid his
price and brought it to us. We kept it for a few days, make sure it drank and ate
ok, and released it back into the desert where it belonged.
Arizona Coral Snake
This is the other type of venomous snake in Arizona, that many people tend to fear.
But in truth, this snake is shy and no deaths have been attributed to it. Most
bites from the Arizona Coral Snake are from people picking them up and handling
them. They don't strike out quickly like rattlesnakes do, but must hang on for a time
injecting the venom. This makes it very hard for an accidental bite from one of these.
Best to be safe, and observe from a distance, rather than play around with one.
