Javelina Picture
Javelina

This piglike animal (though they aren't pigs, but are a Collard Peccary) are common in this area. They travel in small herds, and with sharp canines can fight well. Their diet is just about any edible plant material they can find, including prickly pear cactus, spines and all! That sound you heard is what they sound like, sniffing out food. Since they are a somewhat large animal, (30-60 pds) their only predators are coyotes, cougars and bobcats. With rapid speeds, up to 25 miles per hour, they can run from danger, but if cornered are a very fierce animal to encounter.

Sonoran Desert Toad

Sonoran Desert Toad

These toads come out deep from the ground during our yearly monsoon season. At about 6 inches long in adulthood, it's our largest toad in Arizona. It can also be very dangerous to pets out here. The skin of the toad produces toxins that reacts with mucous. If a dog mouths a toad, it will suffer severe discomfort with the possibility of paralysis and death. In fact, if a toad sits in a dog's water dish for some length of time, and the pet subsequently drinks the water, the dog can become quite ill, perhaps even die. If your home is near an area that collects alot of rain each summer, it's best to keep pet dishes indoors, and supervise when your dog is outside.

Antelope Jackrabbit Picture
Jackrabbit

The Jackrabbit we see most often around here, is the largest of 4 species, the Antelope Jackrabbit. They are not a rabbit at all, but a true hare. From head to tail, it's about 2 feet long, and can weigh up to 12 pounds. That's larger than many of our pets! From what I've seen of them, they aren't very afraid of much. Their natural predators are hawks, eagles or coyotes. IF they can catch them. They have been clocked running at up to speeds of 40 miles per hour, and maintained that speed for over a mile! I know, the few times my dogs have even attempted a chase, they give up very quickly, while I'm sure the Jackrabbit sits laughing away. LOL
