Starfleet Command

USS Leviathan

Lt. Commander Chu Barker

USS EINSTEIN

The main briefing room had a 'full house', the first time in over a month that all the Leviathan's crew had been officially together. Only the newly promoted Rear Admiral Devore was missing. As well as the crew, Admiral Ross was also present, unconventionally sat at the far end of the room. There were also the two 'advisors' from the mirror universe, the mirror images of the Cardassian Lieutenant Dukal and Romulan\Bajorian Commander Rashad.

Of the two, I-T'Kul t'Rashad was the most unfamiliar, both physically and personality. She no longer had her Bajorian nose ridges, they having been removed surgically soon after escaping Bajor and the Dominion in the Mirror universe. She also had little control of her emotions, unlike Rashad T'Kul, who had spent years learning Vulcan techniques. t'Rashad was far more Romulan in spirit than the Commander, which made Comamnder Rashad feel awkward, sort of looking in a mirror and not recognising the image you see.

Finally Admiral Devore arrived and took his seat at the head of the briefing table, for what he knew was to be the last time. Overnight after talking to his wife Sierra and his son Brayden, he had made the decision to accept the position back at Starfleet Command, leaving behind the ship and crew he'd spent two years building. He'd seen many die under his command and he knew that more would probably die.

The first part of the briefing involved reports from the Engineering teams on the various repairs aboard ship. Then they came to the main reason everyone was here, Lieutenant Commander Barker rose from his seat and took control of the briefing. He was going to lead the search for the mirror Leviathan, using the Hellcat, the Leviathan was still five weeks from being spaceworthy.

"Latest reports from the Romulans confirm that one of their supply bases close to the neutral zone was attacked by a vessel of unknown origin. The base was raided and most of the supplies were taken." Chu reported. "We'll be launching the Hellcat within the next two hours and we should be able to rendezvous with a Romulan warbird that is being sent to meet us within two days."

"The Romulan's are assisting us ?" Commander Rashad enquired.

"It's in their interests to help us find this vessel." Chu replied. "Remember, in the mirror universe, the Terran Empire is at war with the Romulans."

"So what are we facing ?" Lieutenant Dukal asked.

"I'll hand over to our advisor, Mister Dukal. He's provided us with most of the information we have about the ISS Leviathan." Chu stated.

With that, the Cardassian rose from his seat and stood next to the viewscreen.

"The ISS Leviathan is an Akira class vessel, very similar to your own. The main difference is that your vessel was designed to be multi-functional, whereas the ISS Leviathan is a dedicated warship, designed for deep space tactical missions." Dukal started. "It's going to be a hard vessel to fight, but there are weaknesses. For a start most of it's power is diverted to the weapons and shield systems, if we can disrupt the power flow, the vessel will be all but defenceless. In short the vessel is over-gunned and under-powered. Unlike your vessel, there is no ablative armour, that is one thing in your favour. Also because of the powerful shields, their long-range sensors are limited. Finally there's the various cloaking technologies, both Romulan and Federation. The Terran Empire has never been able to get their hands on a Romulan cloaking device and their efforts to develop a method of detecting cloaked vessels have been limited."

"What about detecting the vessel ?" Lieutenant Dukal asked. "How are we going to find it ?"

"Ensign ASHER has been working with myself on modifying the Hellcat's sensors." Advisor Dukal replied. "We think we can detect the quantum fluctuations created by the ISS Leviathan as it moves through sub-space. However, this is untested and the simulations have only predicted that we can detect these fluctuations at ten light years or less. Once the Hellcat has left, I will be working with Lieutenant Taline on converting the sensors aboard the Leviathan. We hope that with the more powerful sensors we can increase the range. We also suggested that we pass this information onto the Romulans, but we have been stopped."

"Because the ISS Leviathan is not from this universe, its quantum signature is uniquely different. We hope that as the vessel moves through sub-space, the interaction between ship and space will create a quantum fluctuation which we hope we can detect." ASHER explained.

"Very impressive." Admiral Devore said. "Now I have something I wish to say. As well as my promotion to Rear Admiral, I have also been offered a new position at Starfleet HQ, which after some thought I have accepted. I will be leaving on the Enterprise in a little over an hour. You are a fine crew and it has been an honour to serve with you, both as your Captain and as your friend. A new Captain will be appointed in the near future, until then command of the Leviathan will be handed to Commander Rashad. As part of my new job involves the assignment of the Leviathan, my first task will be to find this vessel the finest Captain Starfleet has to offer."

Everyone around the table was shocked, some had been aboard the Leviathan when she was first launched and most had been aboard the Leviathan-A during the Barien conflict and the vessels journey to the Andromeda-Cirrus galaxy.

"I think that is all. Dismissed." Admiral Devore ordered.

One by one the crew dispersed, those involved in the search for the Leviathan headed for the shuttlebay. Those staying onboard, went back to their duties.
