It had been a week since Ensign Joka
had attempted to escape. In that week, the crew had discovered nothing
more than that he was a Romulan. Advisor Dakuls efforts to identify
him through tapping into the computer system of a Romulan warbird
docked close by had proved fruitless.
Hed found it easy to tap into the system, hed even managed to link the computer to the central datacore on Romulus, but the DNA came back with no match on file. Which meant one of two things, Ensign Joka was a Romulan born outside the Empire or his identity had been wiped from all the records. The only positive thing from capturing Joka was that they had been able to match the knife and more importantly the poison on the blade to the murders that had occurred on the Leviathan since hed arrived. Joka had given Commander Rashad nothing but abuse. The fact that his identity was unknown frightened her. He was probably a member of the TalShiar and that alone made him dangerous. He was probably a spy sent to gather information on Federation technology, most likely the slipstream drive, the fact that hed taken over the identity of another meant that his master thought it important. A data pad with all the information on the slipstream drive had been found when he was captured. No trace of the real Ensign Joka had been found, the last known sighting was back on Vulcan just before he left for DS9 to join the Leviathan. A search of his former quarters had revealed only one further clue. A vest of sorts and Taline had spent a whole afternoon try to fathom what its purpose was. When Taline had sent the information to Starfleet engineering Corp for a second opinion, hed got a very prompt reply. Cease all investigation on the device. Under no circumstances activate the device. The odd thing about the response was where it had come from. Instead of being from Starfleet Engineering Corp, this response had come from Starfleet Intelligence. The response had also stated that a vessel was being despatched to pick up the device and anyone who had come into contact direct with it. That meant Ensign Joka.
