Inu-Yupiaq Eskimo Dancers |
|||
Inu-Yupiaq Eskimo dancers are a diverse group of students who attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Our dance group consists of native college students from all over Alaska. Students who wanted to continue their traditional dancing while away from their home setting in 1995 formed our group. Our name reflects the two cultures we represent, Inupiaq and Yu'pik Eskimo. Members of our dance group enjoy teaching each other new dances and becoming familiar with other cultures. We have learned, from each other, Inupiaq, Yu'pik, Siberian Yu'pik, Chu'pik and Aleutic songs. Dancing provides a much needed stress relief, as well as a chance to make new friends and carry on traditions.We perform all throughout the school year for many different cultural and community events. We participated in Kivgiq 1999 & 2001 in Barrow, Alaska Federation of Natives in Anchorage, and annually for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, Fairbanks Friends Day Celebration, and the Top of the World Classic Basketball Tournaments in Fairbanks.Our group is currently fundraising so we may be able to travel to to Bethel, New Mexico and Barrow to attend our Native cultural events to be apart our our Native traditions.
