Fort Pickens YRE Visit on March 9, 2003

A dozen members of the Pensacola Volksmarch Club met at Fort Pickens to check out our new Civil War Series Walk in the Gulf Islands National Park.

The morning began with rain, but by the time the walkers assembled to begin, the sun was shining brightly, and the day was perfect for the walk.

Nell Doyel brought kites for everybody so after the walk the kite-flying began. Folks were laughing and running about, keeping their kites flying high and trying to keep them from becoming entangled in neighboring kite strings. It was great fun!

After the kite flying, members sat down to a covered dish feast! Charles Voss, who was hosting the walk, brought his grill to the pavilion and cooked some of his famous barbecued ribs. Other members brought fried chicken, meatballs, salads, and desserts for a great meal.

The camaraderie was special, and it was a fantastic day!

Volksmarchers are OPTIMISTS

A walk set for March 9, 2003 started with clouds and thunder in the a.m. but 13 walkers and 1 dog headed for the national seashore and the Fort Pickens Civil War walk. The clouds blew over, the sun shone, and we had a super walk. A big thanks to Charles and Martha who rerouted, measured, and remapped the trail and who have a 25K bike mapped and ready to go. We walked and seven of us were kids again and flew kites on the beach before breaking for a potluck meal and some great camaraderie.

It was dark when we left the park but no one was ready to leave! If you missed out on this walk please come join us in April when we will meet, walk, and enjoy the azaleas in bloom in the East Hill area.

Thanks to Charles Voss and Martha Hauck for bringing this all about!

Great trail, great food, great Volks, great day!

Ria, in her post-surgery shoe, "manned the fort" while the rest of us walked.

"Kites aloft" after the walk and before dinner.

Beautiful sky, water, sunshine, great company!

A perfect experience.

Only one kite fatality -- the AVA kite.

Charles cooked his SPECIALTY.

Those ribs were SUPERB!

The crowning glory!

Covered dishes for dinner along with Charles' B-B-Q'd ribs!

Thanks everyone for a fantastic and memorable day!
