Award Cloth patch as shown to the right. Route / Rating Rated 1, the Blackwater Heritage State Trail is part of the National Rails to Trails Conservancy Program. This program converts abandoned rail beds to multipurpose recreational uses. This trail began as a logging railroad which carried logs to the mills in Bagdad, FL, but was converted to a military railroad servicing the Naval Air Station, Whiting Field during WWII. The State of Florida took title to the abandoned rail corridor in December 1993. The trail is a 12 foot wide paved corridor with 7 trestles running from Milton to Whiting Field. The trail is marked for a Volksmarch of 10K. The trail is 7.1 miles long, running through open and wooded areas. Only about 10% is shaded. The trail is flat and is rated 1, easily accommodating strollers and wheelchairs. It is recommended that participants carry water because water and refreshments are available only within the city of Milton, FL. The trail is administered by the Florida State Park System.
