Award

"B" award medals depict a variety of historic sites in Pensacola. This was a lengthy series with a different site each year.

Route / Rating

This YRE is rated 1+ and is not suitable for wheelchairs nor strollers. There is one moderate hill and several busy intersections that require caution. Trail is routed along Pensacola Bay, through the historic district and parts of downtown. There has been a lot of preservation and restoration as well as ongoing excavations. Many buildings have become restaurants, shops, museums and businesses. Restorations within the historic district follow strict guidelines. The walk loops through Saint Michael's Cemetery with internments dating back to Pensacola's early history. Gravesites include that of Stephen Mallory, first Secretary of the Navy of the Confederacy; one can also add that he was the ONLY one. A leaflet is provided for walkers noting points of interest. Crosses the CSX railroad tracks and passes the old depot.

Pets

Pets are permitted but must be leashed and their needs cared for.

Directions

From I-10:
Exit 17 (old exit 6) and proceed south on Scenic Highway (US 90) about 7 miles where, at the lower end of the bay, Scenic Highway (US 90) makes a large curve to the right (westward) and the name changes to Cervantes. Continue on Cervantes to Alcaniz (a one-way street to the south). Proceed two blocks on Alcaniz, then right onto Jackson, then right onto Hayne. The Police Department will be on your left.

From US 98:
Turn north onto Alcaniz. Proceed north through two traffic lights and at the railroad tracks turn left. Almost immediately take a strong "curve-turn" back to the right which will put you on Hayne St. Continue north to the Police Department on your left.
