Humour is by far the most significant phenomenon in the human brain because it demonstrates lateral thinking -- the escape from the mundane perceptual path to another path."
Edward de BonoPeople laugh for a variety of reasons -- for happiness or to escape the pressures of society. Events that are unexpected can make us laugh, as well as things that show our weaknesses in a funny way. We also laugh when someone else does something ridiculous or when something happens to which we feel superior.
Using the comics pages, try to find examples of the following types of humour:
BLOOPER: an unintentional mistake in action or language
DEADPAN: a deliberately expressionless face.
DETACHMENT: the quality of standing apart, of being emotionally aloof.
EXAGGERATION: an abnormal enlargement of a character or situation.
INCONGRUITY: the meeting of inharmonious parts.
IRONY: secret ridicule or the outcome of a situation that is the opposite of what is expected.
JARGON: the vocabulary of a particular group with special or technical terms.
MALAPROPISM: a ridiculous misuse of words.
PARODY: an imitation for a comic effect or ridicule.
SATIRE: the holding up of human follies or vices to ridicule or scorn.
SLAPSTICK: exaggerated actions that create a comic effect.
